MARPLE BUSINESS WATCH SCHEME
In 1998 a Business
Watch scheme was launched in Marple Town Centre to tackle problems
with shoplifting, vandalism and other offences. In conjunction with
the Chamber of Commerce, local police set up the scheme which is
Chaired by Paul Howard gents outfitters on Market Street. Members of
the scheme became more aware of local problems by holding monthly
meetings which also provide valuable support to members and an
opportunity for local police to detail ongoing criminal activity.
Towards the end of 1999 a CCTV system was provided with Government
funding for the Marple Town Centre. This has assisted police in
identifying crime and offenders in order to reduce further
opportunities for crime to occur. Members of the Business Watch
scheme in Marple display window stickers in their front windows and
posters to advise customers:
'Thefts from shops and offices cost
millions of pounds each year. You, the customer, pay the price.
Greater Manchester Police and local businesses in the area have
joined together to form a Business Watch. Please let us know if you
see anything suspicious on these premises - after all it's YOU we're
trying to help.' |
