Feedback from Readers - May 2001 |
The following article was intended to accompany the item about the Regent Cinema featured in the April 2001 issue of the Community News in our regular feature "Local History & Heritage with the Marple Website". Unfortunately it was omitted by the paper, although a heavily edited version eventually appeared in the May issue with the article about the Marple Hall Sale. We like to fully acknowledge the people who get in touch with us and we apologise for the omissions from the paper, even though it's outside our control. This is the article as we hoped it would appear. |

The success of our appeal for feedback has continued to reveal some interesting and unexpected items. Recent contacts have included Ken Grafton of Compstall, who has in his possession an ancient stone-age hand corn-grinding stone found on Marston Moor. A broken section of a similar item was featured on the Channel 4 programme Time Team, whereas Ken's example is actually complete.
Bill Beard, former skipper of the New Horizons narrow boat, lent us an album of old local postcards, an original copy of the programme for Marple's Festival of Britain celebrations held in 1951 and also gave us access to his extensive collection of slides and photographs of the canals and waterways.
Mary Corbishley of Marple was kind enough to allow us to borrow her original copy of the official handbook and souvenir for the Marple Conservative & Unionist Bazaar, held at Shepley Hall, Marple on the 4th, 5th & 6th of November 1926.

We were also fortunate to spend time with Walter Thorpe of New Mills, who, in addition to having a superb door from Marple Hall dividing his lounge and dining room, has a great collection of old photographs of the Marple and Hawk Green areas which he happily shared with us.
Many of Bill and Walter's postcards and photographs have been added to a new feature on the Marple Website entitled "A Virtual Time Tour of Marple". This is a collection of on-line picture galleries arranged into categories such as Market Street, Stockport Road, Brabyns, Events and People to mention just a few. With individual contributions ranging from one or two pictures to whole albums, there are already several hundred pictures available for viewing. With the ongoing generosity of the Marple Local History Society, who have been extremely supportive, we expect this feature to continue growing steadily in the future.

On a similar subject, but concerning the old photos of tomorrow, there will be a Marple Local History Society exhibition next month entitled "Marple 2000". To be held in the Library between 12th & 26th May, the exhibition will feature pictures of "Marple People at Work and Play" taken by local photographer David Brindley throughout last year. This Millennium Project was funded by the National Lottery and the photographs will form an historic archive for the future. You really should go along and see if your picture was taken!
We would like to extend our thanks to Ken, Bill, Mary and Walter for sharing these fascinating items with us. We would also like to thank Ray Noble for getting in touch to tell us about the section of track from the old Marple Tramway (featured in the March issue) that was used to form a rail around the fire in the Navigation Hotel. We followed this up but unfortunately there is no trace of it remaining today.
If you have any interesting pictures, artifacts or memories to share with us,
please get in touch.
