I really enjoyed the time
I spent in Marple in 1996 and therefore it was
lovely to come upon this site. I was sad to read that the Jolly Sailor
has been closed for I met some really nice people there and had a
great time.
Hopefully I can visit Marple again, some day. Satu, Finland |

I have just found the website and think it is great. I have been living in the U.S. for the last 15 years and now living in New Orleans, Louisiana. I work as a flight attendant for American Airlines. I would love to hear from any old friends who see this message. |

Thanks for your recent email Mark re the Bowling Green pub. Your site is a wonderful attractive and informative one and I am enjoying learning more about my birthplace. I knew nothing before this and did not visit Marple until 1980. I was born there in 1924. I have a book of my mother's with notes of places we moved to and some dates. One is Jan 1924 at the Bowling Green and then March 1925 Worcester so we did not stay too long in Marple. In 1926 we moved to Coventry where I stayed until migrating to Mackay QLD in 1952. I look at the Coventry site too and have found some covkids in Australia and Canada that went to the same school as me but many years after, and one who worked with my two sisters-in-law. It truly is a small world. Wishing you all a Happy New Year. |

Happy New Year Mark. Great website, keep up the good work. I enjoy peeking into the village, as I was born in Marple and now live in Canada. I would love to come for a visit, but as costs are against me, this website is the next best thing. Thanks again. All the best for 2001. |

An
excellent web site! Just the ticket when I'm feeling a little homesick.
For those of you who don't know me, I used to live in Marple Bridge from
the early 70's up until 1991. I played rugby for Marple Hall, Marple and
Davenport. I attended Ludworth Primary School after which I moved to
Marple Hall. Following a brief sojourn at Stockport College (to retake
failed A-levels) I moved on to Salford University.
After that I moved to North America. I currently live in Montreal, Canada, where I now practice Patent Law. This follows several years of itchy feet (Dallas, San Diego, Boston, Vancouver). I only tend to return to Marple Bridge once a year, usually around Christmas time. If anyone out there recognizes my name, please feel free to drop me a line at the above e-mail address. I am especially interested in anyone who attended Marple Hall School between the years 1976 to 1983. Cheers, Philip |

I am from Nacogdoches, Texas, and have visited Marple many times and it is my favorite English village. This is probably due to dear friends who live there; more specifically, my pen-pal, with whom I began writing when we were little girls of 12 yrs. old, and this was nearly 40 years ago! My first visit was in 1976, and my most recent was the summer of 2000. I have seen some things go by the wayside, but for the most part, Marple remains the charming small town it always was. You have gorgeous scenery nearby, and beautiful views. I love the canal! And your cool summers and friendly townsfolk...and I really enjoy this website which enables me to have a virtual visit to Marple any time I want to come. Wanda Cuniff in Texas. |

As I said in an earlier entry I was born in the Bowling Green pub. I know it closed down but have not heard it's fate nor what might have replaced it. I am now living in an extensive sugar cane growing area. The sweet life one might say. Lovely weather most of the year. |

HELLO. Have just read the Stockport Heritage Mag, noticed the web-site on the story about Middlewood Station. Typical Railtrack. Nice to see a local web-site with all the local info. I have loads of Old Photos on Marple in my collection dating back to the 1860's. Perhaps 1 day we'll have a Bredbury -&- Romiley web-site. More of the OLD PHOTOS on Marple would be really good. Its great
to see Marple on the web. I use to live there from about 1966 to 1976
before then i lived in Marple Bridge from when I was born in 1951. But now
I live at the very top of Scotland where its quicker for me to get to
Iceland than you lot to get to Spain but its great up here as Marple used
to be and still is after reading your pages.
So good luck to one and all from Caithness and me george@gunn45.freeserve.co.uk |

Sorry
folks. Didn't know space was limited, so my earlier message got cut off!
Basically, just wanted to say what a great website. It's brought back many
happy memories of Marple, and the surrounding area.
I was at RHCP until 1962. Anyone remember the tree that got struck by lightning a few yards away from the classrooms? And how the whole class burst into tears with the shock?! And then to "The Willows" from 1965-1967. Anyone remember teachers like "Pop" Mason? Besides teaching science, he would lead coach loads of kids over Kinder Scout - and beyond - in all weathers...what an introduction to the hills! Or "Digger" Graves, the Deputy Head. I can recall names like Valerie Parnham, Paul Wise, Lesley Brace, Felicity Brown, Robert Cunliffe... If anyone out there remembers me, do get in touch! |

Hi all!
well what can I say, this is one of the best local web sites I've seen, a
credit to you as is your friendly town. We may be moving to Compstall soon
with a view to taking over one of the public houses so if we do we will
hopefully see you all then. Cheers!! (hic).
You live in a really wonderful area please look after it for future generations. Helen -&- Karl Guare |

I was
brought up in Marple and at the age of 16 joined the Royal Navy.
Occasionally I would come home on leave and see my parents and friends,
but really you could say I moved away from that time. I now live in a
lovely little town called Dalgety Bay in Fife, Scotland, where I met my
wife, Pauline. We have three wonderful children, two girls and one boy.
The point I'm trying to make is that it is great to find a web site which in a way belongs to us all who come from Marple ---- great stuff. |

Hi...I was
using a search engine looking for anyone with the name Mackereth. I put
together a book last year (took two years to do) about my family. I
discovered you website, due to your name Mark. I wonder if there is any
relation? My grandfather was born in York England in the late 1800's and
came to Canada in the early 1900's. I live in Canada now. He had a brother
that ran away during that time period and nobody has heard from that part
of the family since. There is some speculation that he may have gone to Australia.
Anyway if you are interested in checking out this family tree in Canada
please email me.
I really enjoyed your site. Seems like a nice place, much like the place I live. We are a small town in northern Ontario, Canada. A very friendly place to live where people all know each other and care very much. Hope to hear from you and keep up the good work on your site. Sincerely, Debbie Mackereth |

Good
heavens! A Marple website! Excellent! I was born in Marple in 1951 in the
building that used to be St Martins Vicarage (at the very top of Brabyns
Brow by the lock), and lived at 59 Station Road with my parents (Nan and
Michael) and my 2 brothers (Martin and Timothy), until 1975 (-ish) when we
moved to Hyde. I went to RHCP and then to The Willows, and went to St
Martins church.
What do I remember about Marple? The Hollins Mill chimney being blown up; Archers the bakers; Mr Chew the barber (on Market Street); the awful swimming baths; "Pop" Mason (the science teacher at the Willows); Mrs Jackson (at RHCP); the appalling cinema (The Regent); the old cub -&- scout hut in the Memorial Park; the old railway station at Marple with the L1 steam engines, or the early diesel engines going to Hayfield?! And I remember the allotments on which Norbury Avenue(?) and the rest of that estate was built (off Manor Hill Road) in the 1960's. Then there was an amateur dramatic society that use............. |

Mark the
Marple web site is getting better and better, I really enjoy looking at it
and remembering all the places you have on it. As my family are all over
here now we look forward to seeing what new things and ideas you have on
the web page. Love the Romiley Young farmers show page as I rode in it in
the 1950's and it brought back lots of memories. Last time I was over the
we went on pub walk around Marple and Compstall it was great to see some
of the best locals on the web.
Great work Mark! |

It was lovely looking through the site. Brought back some very happy memories. My Father owned a little house in Strines many years ago. My Husband and I visited my mother and father there many times. We never could get over the views from their dining room window. The house is now owned by a Mr.-&- Mrs. Peter Mitchell. Somewhat altered from the original but still very lovely. I now live in the U.S.A but for all the years I've lived away, I still get very homesick. Hopefully we will be back to visit before too long. |

When I was
a young boy..1960..64. I would, finances permitting, take a train from
Manchester city center to Marple and wander along the canal paths. I lived
in Clayton at the time and I used to always think how wonderful it would
be to live somewhere as pretty as Marple.
Well, 35 years later, living in NJ, USA and still think fondly of those few days in Marple. All the best to people there. |

I have
recently moved to Marple and my family in USA and South Africa have shared
with me in learning about Marple from this excellent site.
After viewing the Mellor gardens page I cannot but comment! What a pity the council does not keep the Marple street flower beds in the same order! I work in Tameside and all these towns are filled with flowers and colour at present. Perhaps the community should be more involved with brightening up Marple shopping and central street areas? PS Is not your spelling incorrect for River Tame in introduction pages? I understand River Thame is near London! |

My husband and I have recently moved into David Brindley's old house in Marple and moving up from Devon was a bit of a culture shock, but I feel very at home now and very settled. And thanks to your home page I can now find my way around. Thank you! |

Just discovered this brilliant site. Brought back a lot of memories . Lived at Heswall, Field House Lane, from 1956-1971. Went to Mrs Hutton's on Arkwright Rd for a year or so , then King's Macc. Various memories; training it to school, tired old steam trains ,frozen points etc ; being a regular at the Ring o'Bells from an early age; doing the Xmas post ,and having letters blown out of my hands into the Canal at Posset Bridge ;Friday night at the Regent, followed by chips on Hollins Lane; playing lacrosse on the Rec and at Brabyns; playing in the tunnels, and on the machines at the Roman Lakes;fishing at Top Lock. Now living in Dunblane, Scotland, an exile, like most of your contributors. By the way, I don't feel as old as I probably sound! |

can and always like to leave a message. I am very, very home sick and am
dying to come back to Marple for a visit, I'm hoping next year will be the

Hello to everyone in Marple. I grew up in Marple until the age of 21 and then joined the Royal Air Force. I am sat writing this note during a boring nightshift at RAF Lossiemouth Scotland. I am experiencing problems reading the guest book, I noticed a name Brian Ashworth he probably not know me but I could possibly help him get in touch with a couple of names he mentions in his message. Brian drop us a line. I too went to Marple Hall 2 years behind you. Anyway a very interesting page time to go and do some work. Regards Ash. |

Hello Marple! Greetings
from Down Under. Although I lived in Woodley until

Hi,
great site, what a trip down memory lane. Joanne Simms (that name's
familiar? same year at Marple Hall? when was it? er... '68 - '75??)
message mentioning Miss Whittington turned my legs to jelly - being a
complete P.E. wimp, and always 2nd last to be chosen for any team!- it
brought it all back! I moved away in '76 and have lived in Torquay since
1978, but visit Marple a couple of times a year - my parents still live
where I was born -&- bred in Station Road. Someone mentions RHCP which
made me remember the old sports day chant " 2, 4, 6, 8, who do we
appreciate? RHCP - Rose Hill County Primary"! Although we didn't
appreciate being given "the whack" with a long piece of Perspex
by a teacher who I won't name - mostly the boys - who remembers that?
Wouldn't be allowed these days! Lynn Seal (nee Petrie) |

I must come

I really
think the site is great I was born in Mellor and went to Mellor school
then onto Woodville now re-named I think. I saw Mellor on the web and then
searched for Marple. I am helping my son Sebastian with his topic on

in Cornwall and the site has made me homesick.
I will definitely return to the site to keep up with news. |

Hello from
Boston. In my family tree search I found my Grandfather was born in Marple
around 1879. His parents John Vaughan and Mary Rowcroft were from Compstall,

Certainly this is a well thought out site, and very informative and I'm happy to have found it. Best Regards, Ron Vaughan |

Excellent site; plenty of local information and great links. Especially pleased to see a picture of our house on the net ( follow links to pictures of Mellor by Geoff Heath ). If anyone reading this also enjoyed the site and would like to visit the area we have self-catering accommodation available; please e-mail thehayloft@three-chimneys.com for further details. Hi
Mark
Further congratulations on this site - it just keeps getting better and better. I have had great fun tonight showing my husband just how many pubs in Marple I have sunk more than one jar in - I was secretly glad that they were only photos of the pubs in Marple and not the surrounding areas - he would most definitely think I was a real beer monster if there were! I also enjoyed my virtual walks along the canal, my wet day out on the Roman Lakes with my Dad losing an oar and having to scream our way back to the boat house, even smelly the candy floss stalls at the carnival and dreaming of becoming the leader of the Romiley Aces Morris Dancers, my thighs are beginning to sting from all that slapping and marching on tiptoe. Thanks for that. I am still looking for my friends, and I have discovered that I should have paid more attention in my maths lessons - I went to Marple Hall from 1977 - 1982. Thanks again for the wonderful memories........... |

Have just found the Marple Page. Have a lot to read yet. I was born in the Bowling Green pub in September 1924 when Mrs Gradwell owned it. her granddaughter Beatrice Field was born later in one of the then 3 cottages adjoining. I was disappointed that it was the only pub with out it's own little page. I did not get back to see the pub until 1985 while visiting Beatrice and family who now live in Poynton. I saw it again in 1994 but have not spent any time looking around the town. My parents moved away when I was about 6 months old and I was reared in Coventry and came to Australia as a ten pound Pom with my husband and small boy in 1952. I don't know if I will be able to visit again but if I do will spend time having a good look around. Thanks for a lovely site. |

What a nice page. The Marple Hall section was most interesting to me for Anne Isherwood was my Great-grandmother. I have an old photo copy of Marple Hall. My father spoke fondly of the Hall and would be so upset over it's demise. I hope to visit you next year. Good luck and best wishes for your continued success. |

Hello
from Llan-yr-afon, Cwmbran, South Wales!
As a result of an accident to my spine, I spent seven years on my back, lying on an iron frame, at the Childrens' Orthopeadic Hospital, Dale Road, Marple Bridge, Cheshire. The period was from approximately 1932 until 1939. It is so long ago, I can only remember three patients and their names were Mary and Tommy. My best friend was called Terrence who unfortunately died after I was discharged. I am not sure if the hospital is still operating with all the cut-backs these days. My brother Gly and I have spent happy days on holiday with our cousins Ron and Jenny Wolstencroft, who lived in Dobinets Lane, Baguley. We had great times at the little Methodist church. |

Really nice
Web site ! I was reading the guestbook just now, and I saw a message left
by Erik from The Netherlands (Sept 1999) which reminded me I had a story
just like his !
I also fell for a really pretty girl from Marple, about 20 years ago too ... her name was Michelle Randles, I think she lived in Hawk Green, and I guess we would both have been about 16 or 17 at the time. I was wondering if anyone knew her - if they do, say hi from me ! From what I remember, Marple's a lovely place, and it's great that it has its own Web page ! Steve (The boy with Christopher Lee eyes - well, that's what she thought, anyway !) |

I live in Marple and have since 1984, I think that the Forum -&- Noticeboard is a great section because I can get information on local things that are happening in Marple. I have been a regular visitor of the site now for about 2 months |

Born in
Hawk Green and played for the cricket club for many years. My son still
lives in Marple and sent me the web site address. Very well done. It
brought back a lot of memories. I've been in the USA now since 1984
currently residing in a small beach community on the east coast of
Florida.
Thank you. |

Nice to see
photo's of "Home" on the net. I grew up in Marple bridge and am
now living in Germany. As a youth I always thought it would be a great
idea to have the old millstone from the Marple bridge Mill dug up and put
on display. The thing is (was) lying buried on its side behind the midland
car park - I discovered it quite by accident. Now there is a thought for
any local historians to ponder over.......

Neat site!
I last visited the site when it was in it's infancy, without all the bells
and whistles it now has. Coming from the 'internet capital of the world',
San Francisco, I pretty much expect feature-rich sites, and innovative
features. This goes well beyond what I'd expect from my little home town.
It's self-evident to see how much effort has been put into this, and I hope your efforts [webmaster] are rewarded (that is, it won't be a financial burden to maintain -&- expand). In short, a gem of a site! |

Wow. This
site is really impressive. I live in Marple Township, Delaware County over
in the United States in Pennsylvania. This is so neat finding a sister
town all the way across the ocean. I would be interested in seeing some
more pictures. This looks like such a nice place to be. May I suggest that
you visit the Marple, USA website at
http://www.marple.net Check out the links and have fun |

A
big hello to Marple from Denmark.
After reading your guest book I can see that I am not the only one to miss my old home town. All my old haunts, in the form of the wonderful photo gallery, swam before my eyes - literally!! YOU MADE ME CRY !!!! Anyway - apart from that - I loved the site - and will be back again. |

A most
interesting site. I have been trying to find if anyone would be interested
in putting pressure on Stockport Council to fund the development of a site
for Marple which would be more extensive in its coverage. This is very
good but it could be much improved with a greater resource input.
I am a relative newcomer to Marple and have a great affection for the place. Hence I want to do whatever I can to ensure that it develops as a vibrant community and I can see the place that an officially recognised community website might play in this. If I can be of any help then please let me know. I was concerned when I heard the rumours about the possible closure of the Regent Cinema but on phoning them I was assured that this was not the case. If there is such a proposal then we must do everything we can to ensure that this most valuable community resource survives as a cinema. Can you possibly confirm whether the rumour is no more than that? Best wishes and good luck, D |

Good web-site for the people of Marple that are working abroad, like myself, so that it is possible to keep tracks on what is happening back at home. |

Many Thanks
for a great website, I have collected more information about the
Bradshawe-Isherwoods over the last two days than anywhere else on the
internet and thank you for the excellent photographs of Marple and
Wybersley Halls. I hope to be able to vist Marple some time this year.
Best regards and wishes |

Very
pleased to see the old home town listed on the web. I live in Canada now
but was born in Rosehill and went to All Saints, then to Hyde Grammar
School. Moved to Canada in 1959.
Any old friends out there please drop me a line. Tony Gee |

I am a newcomer to internet so I was really pleased and surprised to discover or rediscover Marple! My maiden name was Westrip and I was born in Marple at Holly Mount on Station Rd. Many moons ago I might add. I spent my childhood in Marple and still hold wonderful memories of fishing for sticklebacks in the canal, cycling, learning to swim in Marple baths and taking part in the annual Carver Institute pantomime. Sadly I don't visit too often now as I have been living in Athens Greece since 1962. |

Great to
see Marple on the map. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me and
liked me of course. Attended Marple Hall 82-87 for a few days, when I
decided to go that is ha ha ha. Especially looking for Juile Schofield,
Kathy Garlic, Tim Freeborough and Dawn Wimpeney.
Keep up the good work editor - will pop in every now and then to see if you've added anything. If anyone knows of other local related sites ie Romiley please forward information at above address. Be good all and have happy lives |

I came across this website by accident, I lived in Marple for most of my childhood (I was born in High Lane). I attended Rose Hill Primary school and Marple Hall Grammar school as it was in the early 1970s. I then went on to stockport College. I have 2 sisters and a brother, we are all scattered around the country now, I am training to be a teacher and living in Cambridgeshire. It would be good to hear from old school friends especially from those who attended Marple Hall 1970-75. |

I was born in Marple --Rose Hill specifically as Sharron Gee. I loved all the pictures and information - even though I'm a Canuck now, I still think of Marple as my home town and my family still is in and around Marple. If there are any people who remember George -&- Iris Gee on Rose Hill please e-mail me. Great job on the site -- the pictures are stunning. Good luck and keep up the good work! |

Gosh I feel
homesick! Congratulations on a superb site. This guest book reads like a
list of ex-pats. Marple folk certainly do get around, don't they? I'm in
the Highlands of Scotland. Love to Ludworth Primary School and Marple
Hall. Is Miss Whittington, terror of the sports lessons still around?
Lovely to see Marple Band is doing so well. What about the lacrosse at
Mellor?
Best wishes. |
