Title: TRAFFIC CONGESTION

The signs on Stockport Road say there will be roadwork on Dan Bank starting on September 2 for 5 weeks.
That's Ok we thought . When our daughter gets married in Stockport on October 6th they will be finished.

Only to find at 9:45 on Saturday that my other daughter will be late for her 10:00 hair appointment - she is stuck in traffic caused by roadworks.

Why do these comanies promise one thing and then not stick to it.

These roadworks added over 30 minutes to journeys to and from Stockport which had we known about them we could have planned to go via High Lane.

Surely they need permission from Stockport or Cheshire council to put up temporary traffic lights - and to give advance warning.

A VERY irate Marple resident !

If I was going to something as important as a wedding I would have checked with SMBC about roadworks, if you ring them they will tell you. I rang them a few weeks ago to find out what was happening on Stockport Road near to Dan Bank and they told me.
By the way, Dan Bank is a little dead end road to the right with the few large houses on it before you come to the farm, the road that goes to the traffic lights is called Stockport Road.
Also they have road works in High Lane as well, as I said always check instead of just moaning after the event.
How do know that the roadworks were not doing some vital repair to a major gas pipe, nobody is allowed to do roadworks without getting planning permission and producing all sorts of Method Statements, Risk Assessments for Health and Safety etc.

If a notice says there will be road works for five weeks from 2 September then we should be able to rely on it.  Or are we now supposed to phone the council asking them whether road signs mean what they say?  ('Does that 30mph sign mean what it says?'

If the works were delayed then a further notice should have been put up warning drivers about it.  It's not rocket science!

Having sat in these roadworks for quite some time on three occasions so far (my own fault I should have realised how bad it would be and gone via HL) can I please ask anyone who also finds themselves stuck there to PLEASE use their handbrake. Brake lights, especially high level ones, are quite dazzling, and if you just sit there for 10 mins or more resting your foot on the brake it is an absolute pain in the backside for the person sat behind you, plus I would have thought a little inadvisable in case someone shunts you, or you suddenly get cramp.
Oh and having now studied it in great detail - the lean-to outside the Railway is indeed hideous, but may encourage people to quit as anyone standing in it is going to get very cold ankles!

The area between Dooley Lane and Hill Top Drive including Marple Brook  to the South is called Dan Bank, to the north of the road is Lower Dan Bank, and and to the south is Higher Dan Bank and the road that runs between is Dan Bank. Ray

The roadworks could have been delayed due to bad weather, workmen being off sick, materials not being available, any project can be delayed, it is calculated to take so long and it is very few projects that meet the target. No company is going to waste more money producing additional signs, there is a telephone number on the signs why do people not ring it to find out what is happening?

As for Dave, the 30mph sign is nothing to do with the council, that is the law, try reading your Highway Code once in a while and you will realise that.

Alison I agree with you people should use their handbrakes, I am a considerate driver and always use mine when stopped even at traffic lights.

Oh dear, where to start!  Speed restrictions have got everything to do with the council, as it is their job to set them.   Try reading your Road Traffic Regulation Act (1984) once in a while and you will realise that!

Just to let you know the rules regarding temp traffic lights, it is all governed by the Street Works Act and is supposed to be policed by the council. The lights on Dan bank when they were set up last weekend did not comply with the Street Work act, in fact they were dangerous as they had traffic trying to go along Stockport Road and join from Dooley Lane at the same time.
Dan Bank is a designated Traffic Sensitive road and under the Street Works act the council can stipulate when the work is carried out and what type of traffic management system is put in place, either manual or automatic. The problem with automatic lights is that they take no account of traffic flows while manual lights have to be operated by a person and are therefore more costly and not liked by the utilities.
Where the council officers (not the councillors) failed is that they have allowed one utility company to dig up all 3 roads out of Marple at the same time, namely Station Road, Dan Bank and Hollins Lane.
I just dread to think what t is going to be like when they have to undertake the stabilisation of Stockport road and probably have to close dan bank!!

I received a message from the North West Gas Alliance (0161 703 1000) saying they have had major problems with the works on Dooley Lane... and the work will take a further THREE weekends.

The sign on Dooley Lane has been amended to say 8 weeks (I assume the others have too). That wasn't hard was it!

Who Sets the Speed Limits?
The Highways Agency, a division of the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, is ultimately responsible for setting speed limits, but the responsibility is delegated locally.

I'm afraid thats nonsense.

The Highways Agency are responsible for trunk roads only (Motorways and major A roads), the local highway authority (Stockport MBC in the case of Marple) are responsible for the upkeep and management of local roads - including speed limits.

As Marple has no trunk roads, all roads in Marple are the full responsibility of Stockport MBC.
