Title: Somerfield Supermarket, your views?
Post by: the rover on October 12, 2007, 12:51:28 PM
The new Somerfield supermarket!

What do people think about? What are youe opinions?

Personally I like it, very convienient, somethings are dear, somethings are cheap when compared to the Co-op. I live very close to it and can send my daughter to it whereas I cannot send her to the Co-op.
I think that they need to have more staff on the tills or have different tills for just petrol, I was in there the other night and bought a CD as well as some shopping. The lad on the till was getting my CD from a low cupboard so no-one but me could see him and a queue formed. There were people starting to get angry and I could envisage a punch-up starting, luckily other staff came running out to open other tills.
Another problem is parking, there is not enough parking spaces for people who want to do shopping, if somebody is getting petrol and then doing some shopping please don't leave you vehicle at the petrol pump preventing other people from getting petrol whilst you wander around the supermarket.:alien:

I like it, its more convinient than the co op for us.

Is this store more expensive than the general somerfield supermarket or are the prices the same??

I noticed the posters in Cadburys sweet shop "Use us or loose us" :(

I called in there today and had to wait in a very long queue, all the pumps had vehicles at them and many where unoccupied. I suppose some were just shopping and others doing both shopping and buying petrol.

I did suggest to one of the staff that perhaps a "pay at the pump" facility would have been useful.

All in all, I do like the store, I just hate going in the Co-op, its just a pity its not bigger with more parking

its still 24/7 they just have to lock the doors at ten and serve from the hatch because of security reasons

Um - as far as I am aware Asda have not bought Somerfield - they were considering an offer for some of the stores, but the only potential bidder for the whole estate is the coop. This was right as at April, and there is nothing more recent than that on the bbc news site

Alison's right : Somerfield are a privately-owned company, not listed on the stock exchange, they are not owned by Walmart or ASDA.

Co-op have indicated they want to purchase Somerfield (all 900 stores), see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7352189.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7352189.stm).  ASDA fancy buying 600 stores, while Sainsbury's fancy 350 of 'em.

So perhaps Marple will become like its neighbour New Mills and have two Co-op stores? http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?ssm=0&scrambleSeed=13250258&keywords=&companyName=co-op&location=new+mills&x=0&y=0&M=0 (http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?ssm=0&scrambleSeed=13250258&keywords=&companyName=co-op&location=new+mills&x=0&y=0&M=0)
