Stockport Council has selected the company who will help deliver its new recycling service.
Over the next two years, the Council is making big improvements to the way it collects recycling and refuse across the borough. These improvements will see many households receiving wheelie bins for the first time. These bins will enable residents to recycle even more materials from their doorstep.
In 2009, 107,000 households in Stockport will receive a 180 litre brown and a 180 litre blue wheeled bin. The brown bin will be used to collect glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and food and drinks cans. The blue bin, which has already been delivered to 30,000 households, is for the collection of mixed paper and card.
Stockport Council invited companies to tender for the contract to provide 184,000 wheeled bins needed for the new service. The contract was awarded last month to Otto (UK) Ltd. A separate contract was also awarded to Egbert Taylors for on-street recycling containers which will be placed throughout Stockport.
In 2010, residents will receive a food caddy for the weekly food waste and a black wheeled bin for residual waste. The contract for these bins has not yet been award, the council is due to go out to tender in 2009 for these containers.
Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “This is a vital step towards improving recycling services for local residents. These improvements will answer the public demand for plastic and cardboard recycling and for wheeled bins. Stockport currently has the highest recycling rate in Greater Manchester and improving their service we offer people should help us divert even more waste away from expensive and environmentally damaging landfill.”

Great at last we will get the wheelie bins for recycling, this will stop my monthly trip taking plastic and card to separate points.
But the food caddy seems a rubbish idea, I trailed on a few months back, all you do is put all your food waste (cooked and uncooked) into a plastic bag in a box. Then this goes in your normal waste bin ??? ??? Its supposed to bio degrade faster but your still sending things that can compost (uncooked peelings etc) to landfill :-\

SO we're going to have a line of wheelie bins? Brown, black, blue and green. We recycle a high proportion of out "waste" and currentl only ever half fill the blue bin bag, it will be nice not to have to drive to the tip once a month with a carboard box full of cardboard etc but I'm not exactly sure where I'm going to put all these wheelie bins...
