Watching the Remembrance Parade today when the commentator said that the Poppy Appeal is expecting to raise £40,000,000 with this year's campaign.
Sounds brilliant until you realise the population of this country is around 58,000,000.
Less than £1 per person - about the price of a Mars bar in my local filling station!

Approximately 60p per head seems a modest achievement, although there are at least 10 million children within that 58 million population. Leave them to one side and it's not far off £1 a head, which is not bad considering that not every adult sports a poppy.
(Is 'modest achievement' an oxymoron? Hope not, or I'll get thrown out :o )
