It's been closed for ages behind the new houses. There appears to be no urgency to get whatever work is going on finished. If this was a road closure there'd be hell to pay. Doing my head in >:(
-
it was open this morning although some of the barriers are still part-way across the path.

I've found that the barriers are sometimes helpfully rearranged by the locals only for them to be put back by whoever the contractors are before they busily do nothing all day >:(

A workman at the site told me that the top service of the car park at Wood Lane would be laid on Thursday/Friday and that the Middlewood Way should be open for this Saturday 30th June.

Thanks. I was let through today by the work men although they stressed it is not officially open yet.

Oh I wonder how much that is costing and how much better use the money would have been put to developing cycling facilities :)

I suspect that the work being done on the Middlewood Way has been by the housebuilders adjacent to it.
Maybe the resurfacing of the car park at Wood Lane is a condition required of them for the inconvenience caused by the closure.
Does anybody know?

A 106 possibly

Closure of the Middlewood Way took place to enable a new waste water pipe from the new estate to be laid underground adjacent to or beneath the Middlewood Way and through the car park to link to the existing pipe along Wood Lane. Have a look at the new passageway to the estate and you will see a new grid where there previously was flooding adjacent to the building site. A couple of new manhole covers have appeared (you can hear the water flowing under ground at one of these manhole covers). This work was carried out as part of the application for planning permission for the new estate. All work was paid for by the construction company.

And it's open again, precisely 10 weeks just for that. Clearly no rush to get it done.
But is it finished? I hope not. The length which was presumably dug up has been replaced with some horrible pink gravel like someone's driveway. Not even compacted material like other bike paths, but loose gravel that's tough to cycle over. Given that the path was previously properly tarmacked by the council, how can this be an acceptable replacement?
The car park has just been covered in a darker loose gravel, the fresh tarmac only extends around the manhole cover.

RSH. I share your sentiments about the repair work on the Middlewood Way and have been in touch with the Council about this matter. This work was not carried out by Stockport MBC: it was carried out by Morris Homes. Magic wands cannot be waved to rectify problems such as this overnight simply because examination and consultation between SMBC and Morris Homes has to take place and specialist equipment has to be hired to carry out work so please be patient and give the Council a few weeks to get Morris Homes to improve the surface.

The gravel is terrible I walked to High Lane and back this morning and got the push chair stuck in the gravel twice , dog in one hand pram in the other it's very hard to walk through

No problem, glad they're aware of it. Hopefully it won't be another 10 week closure while they put the proper surface back. ;D

The section from the car par to the start of the tarmac but the new houses is still dreadful cycling on it is extremly difficult just as the car par surface itself is dire.

I still don't understand how they saw it fit to replace tarmac with cheap gravel. Surely it should have been in whatever agreement they had to close the stretch for ten weeks that the resurfacing should be exactly like-for-like. It's such a mess now that's it's going to require closing again just to shovel out all the gravel, take the gates out again and do it properly. And it's only a tiny few metres of path!

maybe it might be ballest, getting ready for a new train track to be laid.......

Just got this helpful reply from a Council Officer
Morris Homes, the developer of a nearby development, have recently laid a new sewer along a section of Middlewood Way in Marple. The works were carried out in agreement with the Council and as part of the reinstatement works, Morris Homes were required to resurface Middlewood to the same specification as the existing path (tarmac overlaid with chippings) so that it will blend in with the existing path. As is sometimes the case when roads and paths are surface dressed using chipping, excess chippings have been laid, which as you point out, makes the path difficult to use by cycles and prams / pushchairs. The Council's Clerk of Works has discussed this issue with Morris Homes with the view of getting the path (and car park) swept to remove the excess chippings and we hope that this work will be carried out as soon as possible (weather permitting). Following your e-mail, I will contact the site manager to highlight your concerns and request that the works are carried out as soon as possible.
See all you have to do is ask (Nicely)

Almost a month after the above response and about 7 weeks since it actually re-opened, still no change on the gravel section.
Maybe I'll just take a broom down and sweep it myself?

I have just received the following email......from a council officer
Morris Homes did carry out some works to removed excess chippings from the path but after visiting the site on my bike to test the condition of the path for myself, I concluded that the work was not sufficient, with an excess of chippings on both the path and on the car park.
I therefore contacted Morris Homes' Engineer, (I have removed the individuals name here), on the 8th August to request that further works were carried out and to liaise with the Council's Clerk of Works to ensure that the works are carried out to our satisfaction this time. He has promised to arrange this to be carried out by their sub-contractor in the next few days. If this does not happen, I will follow it up again.
Sorry for the delay in resolving this issue, but as I am sure you can appreciate, we are reliant on a third-party.
End
I will continue to monitor this.....

Dear Wheels,
Have you been along the section of the Middlewood Way which you refer to in the previous posting?
It appears that some of the chippings have been removed from the car park area - although, in my opinion, they are still too deep.
It doesn't look as though any chippings have been removed from the path. Considering they were supposed to reinstate the path to the original specification you only need to walk a few yards along the path for the difference in the two surfaces to be obvious. Perhaps a man with a brush, shovel and wheelbarrow could pop down from Morris Homes and take the excess away!
Could you contact your 'nice council officer on a bike' to come and have another look please?
Thanks, Lily
