Post by: wadsterboy on October 07, 2013, 06:33:06 PM

Nasty rumour (though heard from several generally reliable sources) are that the Navi has been running its stock down prior ro closing. The organisers of the regular Wednesday night open mic night have apparently been informed of its demise.

Really hope that this isn't true. Any other news?

Are these rumours helpful?

Helpful to whom? What I wanted was further information to clarify the rumour.

If you are that bothered about things, why not phone the pub up and see if they have a table free for tonight.

I hear from Danny that he and Micaela will be leaving this week.
Robinsons are coming in to assess the pub and it should re-open with a temporary landlord by the weekend.

Such a shame.  Great couple.

Two years ago it was great when the refurb was about to be completed.

It was packed friday and saturday nights.

I think the lack of another good local pub close to it has driven a lot of groups down the hill to marple bridge.

Is the robinsons brand not what people want any more.

The midland and norfolk are both independent and give varied and often changing drink offerings.

I'm advised that the Navi will reopen in the near future with a temporary landlord, which will be Keith who used to run the Bull. Robinsons will apparently be seeking permanent replacements to run the pub and it is not (at the moment anyway) destined to go the way of the Pineapple.

Presumably it will appear here soon: http://www.myrobinsonspub.com/news/post/Coming-Soon

PS - notice that the Windsor Castle is up for grabs, which is a surprise, and the Hatters is still on there too.

It is an awful shame about the Navigation. Seemingly, Danny and his partner tried everything they could to make a go out of it.

Who today would want to run a pub? With all the rents/rates/ties/overheads it is absolutely impossible to make even a modest living in 90% of pubs.

With Robinsons pubs it must be 99% of them. The ties are against you all the time. You have to buy virtually everything from them at their dictated price. It isn't their fault. It's just that, that's the way they have operated for 200 years and it has worked up until now but now there is so much competition from independent breweries these days and Robinson's brand is just too tired and too expensive. I'm sure the management at Robinsons know this - so it's not a revelation.

I drove through Hazel Grove last Friday at about 10 pm. There are a lot of pubs on the road mostly Robinsons. Those that weren't shut were empty. You could see through into them from dark to light.

There was one though, The Wetherspoons,  it was absolutely full. In fact there were as many people outside it on the path as there were inside the pub itself.  So somebody is doing something right.

Here's the official answer from Robinsons:

10/10/2013

Dear Mr Whittaker

Thank you for your email dated 8th October regarding the Navigation, Marple.

We would like to inform you that the tenant has ceased trading and the pub has closed temporarily.  We are presently looking to get the pub re-opened as soon as practically possible and we will be seeking a new tenant for the site.

We trust this is acceptable and would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Yours faithfully

Comment: We have heard sad news that the Navigation Public House in Marple is to close. Could you advise if this is true and if it means that it will close permanently like the Pineapple or if you will be seeking new tenants to keep it open.

Thank you.

Mark Whittaker

Are "traditional" pubs what people want these days? Young people certainly don't want that sort of venue and the pub trade used to rely on the generation thing - youths being taken into pubs by their Dads - and if you don't get them young you probably don't get them.

Women aren't particularly interested in the "traditional" pubs these days - their sights are set higher. I have not been a stranger to pubs for most of my adult life but when I've gone to meet friends in pubs in Marple or gone to meetings held in pubs in the village I haven't found them particularly female-friendly. It isn't pleasant getting the "fish-eye" from men round the bar, having one's path to the bar deliberately blocked, being ignored by the bar staff and even having an extremely coarse and unrepeatable comment made to me (I'm 64 for god's sake and by no means a Joan Colllins lookalike!) which was over-heard and laughed at by the landlord - all of which have happened to me in Marple!

Having said that, I haven't been into the Norfolk down in the Bridge but it looks fairly well patronised and in the summer was heaving with all ages of clientele in the evenings. It must be doing something right.

Marple is desperate for a larger pub that serves food.
Where do day trippers go for a traditional pub lunch?
Marple bridge!
Crowns too far from centre.
Ring o bells great but too small ans booked up on most sundays.

I've always thought it needed something like the Midland used to be - like one of those pubs with a ball pool etc...

Nothing for kids to do...

Gaz, I think marple just needs a big pub serving food!

give them some crayons, it works most places.

The function room upstairs would be great as a family dining area away from the main bar, if that was what people prefered.

Missed opportunity.

It's Robinsons that do a lot such a tight lot won't spend money on refurbishment on the smaller pubs .same at the Windsor it wants money spending on it .

Agreed... A pack of crayons and colouring book - purchased from a local shop always does our tribe... But... The 'Whacky Warehouse' style brand and 'keep them busy/peaceful beer' is more attractive.  The vast markup on 'chicken ping' meals is another plus.

Stable Gate in Denton best example around.

Mmmm... Tower of onion rings.

The beer in there has been awful for ages, and if you cant get that right.

Shame. Hopefully someone will make a go of it, next to the cinema and a bus stop, its completely down to beer quality.

Its nothing to do with beer quality.
It is the pub package as a whole.

The Navigation was open and serving customers this evening when I drove past.
