The Ring o' Bells has kindly agreed to host a monthly quiz in aid of the Iron Bridge restoration fund. These will be held on the first Wednesday of each month - the next one being this Wednesday 4th September. The questions will be set each month by the 'Plumber's Mates' and presented in some style by our very own Peter Clarke.

The quiz starts at 9.00 pm but if you want a good seat, early arrival is recommended!

The Ringer's are also continuing their normal regular quiz for various deserving local charities every third Wednesday, which means of course that there's actually one quiz every fortnight from now on :)

We raised £65 towards the Iron Bridge restoration at the Ring o' Bells quiz last month and already it's time for the next one, which is this Wednesday night, 2nd October.

As usual, the quiz itself is planned to start at 9.00 pm, however it's wise to get there early and claim a good seat. This time, instead of a raffle, there's going to be a new game called higher or lower for you to enjoy too.

For those of you who read this forum and will be going - you will gain a slight advantage if you gen-up on Marple Carnival History ;) All the information necessary is available on the main site.

Another good night at the Ringer's with excellent attendance. £94 was raised towards the Iron Bridge Restoration.

Entry to the Quiz is £1 per person with all the proceeds going to the charity of the night. Prizes are a £12.50 token to spend behind the bar for the winners and a £7.50 token for the runners up, all donated by the landlord.

Tickets for the Higher and Lower game are £1 each. 50% of the money taken on the night goes to the charity and the other 50% is the prize. Upto 3 attempts are are made to win the game and if all 3 fail, the money is carried forward to the next quiz.

Next Ringer's Quiz for the Iron Bridge is on Wednesday 5th February, 9.00 pm.

It should be a really exciting night as the Higher and Lower Game was carried over again. I'm not sure how much was carried over (will update when I find out) but with the takings on the 5th it should be close to £100.

The Landlord has decided that rather than let the prize get too large, the game will be played until it's won. Should make an entertaining climax to the evening!

An incredible time was had at the Ringer's last night - it was an excellent quiz (even if we do say ourselves! ) and there was a good size crowd in - £70.55 was raised towards the Iron Bridge Fund.

The Higher and Lower Game was amazing - we had agreed to play until someone won it, as the prize had reached £100 and a second pot had been building nicely for a few weeks. Last time we did this it took 23 attempts before it was won.

Last night 57 tickets were sold. 56 tickets were drawn and nobody won the prize. The 57th ticket drawn was held by a lady collecting money for Breast Cancer Research, and the pub erupted when she won the £100 for charity. You couldn't have written a better script!

Next quiz is on Wednesday 5th November, when the charity to benefit will be The Poppy Appeal again.

Not sure exactly how much was raised in the second Gang Show Quiz as we weren't involved in the counting and neither Peter or I can remember what was announced - we think it was in the region of £60 plus.

I can report that the Higher and Lower Game wasn't won and the £20 pot will go forward to the next game at the quiz for the Iron Bridge on Wednesday 21 January.

The Higher and Lower Game wasn't won and the pot of £47.50 will go forward to the next quiz, on Wednesday 4th February.

The benefactor of this quiz, and the one on 3rd March, will be Mark Houghton - the young Marple boxer from Bredbury Stockport Boxing Club - who has the chance of a lifetime to go on a sporting trip to Canada in April if he can raise enough money. These two quizzes will hopefully help see him on his way.

With a change of Landlord comes a change of routine, and we're pleased to announce that starting next Wednesday 25th February there will be a Ringer's Quiz EVERY WEEK!

This changes the timetable slightly and the second quiz to raise funds towards Boxer Mark Houghton's trip to Canada will now be next week, the 25th February.

A quieter night than usual but the quiz still managed to raise a further £39.30 towards Mark Houghton's trip to Canada. The total raised over the two quizzes for this cause is £115.85, which will be on its way to Mark shortly.

The Higher and Lower Game Jackpot of £100 was not won and will be carried forward to next week, whilst a second pot builds nicely for the game after it's won. Maybe we'll have another one of those exciting 'play til it's won' nights soon!

The next quiz on Wednesday 3rd March will be in aid of Guide Dog puppies.

The quiz on 3rd March raised £82.50 towards the Guide Dog Puppies. Hopefully a similar amount will be raised at the second quiz for this cause, on Wednesday 10th.

The Higher and Lower game ended every time with a pair (you get nothing for a pair....) so the jackpot remains at £100!

A great turnout for last night's Iron Bridge quiz, which was filmed by the Community Channel for a programme they are making about people in the community who are trying to save their local heritage. It's set to go out in conjunction with the second series of Restoration on the BBC this summer. There will be more about this on the web site in the near future.

Back to the quiz, and £79.55 was raised towards the Iron Bridge fund, taking the total raised at the Ringer's to over £1900  :D

The Higher & Lower Game jackpot of £100 was won last night by Gill, my wife. Trouble is she was playing for someone else who had to leave early :(

Nevermind, the second pot was already complete and a third one started. So at next week's quiz, for Riding for the Disabled, the jackpot prize will still be £100

Last night's quiz raised £65 for Riding for the Disabled and the Higher and Lower Game wasn't won, so the £100 prize carries over.

There will be NO quiz next week if England win tonight as it will be the Semi-Final - so let's hope there's no quiz until the 7th of July!

Well scratch that - the quiz is back on for Wednesday 30 June!

It was one of the best attended quizzes so far at the Ringers last Wednesday and a fantastic £100 was raised towards the Iron Bridge Restoration.

The Higher and Lower game continues to torment participants and once again the jackpot prize eluded three attempts to win it.

The next quiz on Wednesday 14th July will raise money for Scleroderma Research. Linda Goldman, who used to work behind the bar at the Ringers, was diagnosed with this debilitating disease a couple of years ago and she has been in and out of hospital on a regular basis since then. All being well, Linda will be at the quiz on Wednesday and we hope there will be a great turn out to help this worthy cause.

Another very well attended quiz last night for Scleroderma Research and it was great to see Linda, the former barmaid at the Ringers who suffers from this disease, there to collect the money on their behalf.

With a small amount of help the amount raised was rounded off to £118, taking the total over two weeks to £250 - a new record that will take some beating.

Next week's quiz will raise funds for Marple Locks Heritage Society, the group that organised the recent Locks Bicentenary, and are now planning similar festival for next year.

The Higher & Lower game wasn't won, despite two thrilling close calls and the £100 jackpot will be carried forward yet again.

It's getting harder to find a seat, the quiz is getting so popular! Last night £115 was raised towards the Marple Locks Heritage Society.

The Higher and Lower Game failed to produce a winner of the £100 jackpot after 3 attempts, so the time has come again to play until it's won (or every ticket is pulled) at next week's Iron Bridge Quiz night. Be there early for a great night!!!

£95 was raised for the Iron Bridge last night and the Higher & Lower game jackpot of £100 was finally won after numerous attempts and several close calls. How can there be so many pairs pulled?!

Next week's jackpot is still £100 and the cause to benefit from the money raised by the quiz will be the Marple Locks Heritage Society again.

Last night the Higher and Lower Game jackpot of £100 was won at the first attempt by a very happy bunch of students from the Ridge College. We wish them the same good fortune today, when they get their A level results!

The Higher and Lower £100 Jackpot stayed intact after 3 attempts, so it will carry forward to next week's quiz for the Iron Bridge on 1st September.

A quieter night last night, which still managed to raise £63 for the Iron Bridge - thank you to everyone who continues to support this cause.

The Higher and Lower game was played with slightly different rules introduced last week that now allow the player to accept £30 if they get to the end of the first line, or they can gamble and go on to try and win the £100. If £30 is taken, as it was last night, the next player plays for £70 but can accept £20 for the first line, and if that's also won the third player can accept £10 or play the second line for £50. It's complicated to explain but not so bad in practice and hopefully means that there will be more winners!

Talking of rules - because the nominated charity did not attend the quiz to collect their donation last week a vote was held by the teams attending last night on which of this year's causes should receive the £113.50 raised. The most votes were received by Otterspool Animal Sanctuary.

Thank goodness Eddy was quizmaster last night - it stopped him winning the H&L again! Stopped me too, even though my ticket was drawn  :(

£101 was raised for Mellor and Marple Bridge Scouts and hopefully a similar amount next week at their second quiz.

Another good quiz for Mellor & Marple Bridge Scouts, raising £105 and taking their two week total to £206.

The Higher and Lower Game wasn't won, so at next week's quiz, which is for the Borch Unit in Pendlebury Hospital, it will be played to a conclusion again - someone will win £100 unless every ticket is drawn without a winner!

Next week is the LAST Iron Bridge quiz night - our match funding raised is only £118 short of our target of £12,500. It'll take a good night to get us there so we hope there will be a good turnout!

The next two quiz nights will raise money for the Princess Royal's Trust for Carers but the big question is will she be fielding a team?

Another £98 was raised for Girl Guides to India last night. The next two weeks worth of quizzes will raise funds for one the the most popular local charities, Otterspool Animal Haven.

It is worthy of note here that Peter recently trawled through this topic and the Iron Bridge Project Diary right back to the very first quiz at the Ring o' Bells on 19th June 2002. He has added up all the money raised since then and it comes to an astounding £20,819.45 that has been donated to local charities and good causes as a result of the Fun Quiz Nights.

This is an incredible achievement. Well done to Peter and Sue!

Typical of the Reds to spoil a good night! Only 6 teams turned up for this weeks quiz (a total of 21 people), far and away the worst attendance since we began the quizzes around 8 years ago!!!! Whilst the rest of you enjoyed the football, the centenary scout camp benefitted from the measley £31 raised. Add this to last weeks £80.50 and they make £111.50 in total. What you call unlucky timing.
Next week is in aid of Help The Aged so hopefully a more normal turnout.

The "Find a Cure for Martha" campaign to raise money for Kidney Research is £111.50 better off after the first of two quizzes at the Ring o' Bells. Same cause next week.

Incidentally, this is a good opportunity to mention that the Ring o' Bells has recently received a Great British Pub Award as the Best Community Pub in the North West. The Great British Pub Awards are run by the Morning Advertiser, the trade paper, and are said to be the Oscars of the pub world. Sue & Peter heard that they'd been short listed recently and then had a visit from the editor who told them verbally that they had won the NW title but to wait until it was confirmed in writing, which duly arrived last week. They will now travel to London, to the Park Lane Hilton, for the finals where they compete for the titles: National Community Pub of the year, NW Pub of the year and possibly National Pub of the year!

I'm sure that their fund-raising efforts detailed in this thread have played a big part in their winning the North West Community Pub of the Year title and we wish them luck in the finals.

The confusion arrived because for the next two weeks its Poynton Ladies Circle

H&L wasn't won so still playing for £100 next week.

Age concern are another £102.50 better off after this week's quiz. Don't know next week's cause but I'm sure it'll be a good one. Can it compete with the Champions League Final? A good place to get away from it if you want too!

Well that's it!! Last night saw the last Ring o' Bells quiz hosted by us and what a send off it was with a packed pub and 29 teams!!
The quiz raised a fantastic £94 for Ludworth & Mellor cubs. we then went into an exciting H&L to a finish playing for the complete kitty which with the nights sales (150 tickets) was a staggering £392. After a number of close calls it was eventually won on the 20 oddth ticket by one of our longest serving teams. Of course this raised another £75 for the cubs making a total of £169 on the night.

Sue & I would like to thank you all for your support for the quiz over the 8 years that we have presented it. Your generosity has seen an unbelievable £31,033.50 raised for various local charities, WELL DONE!!

As you probably know we leave the Ringers on 5th Jan so thanks to you all, it's been a really fun time! :-)

Mark, good luck with the Ringers. I'm an occasional pub person, but the Hatter's and the Railway are my choices (closest to home, but also nice to frequent). I also visit the Ringers (room on the right).

Is there a new landlord going into The Hatter's on the 5th Jan? Are Peter and Sue leaving some of Marple's history hanging on the walls?

marveld,
Thank you for the good luck message.
Anita and I will be running both the Hatters and the Ring O'Bells until a new Tenant has been appointed to take over the Hatters. Steve and Julie, our Holiday relief couple will be managing the Hatters on our behalf in the mean time. There will be pictures of the Marple and Hawk Green Brass Bands and other pictures of Marple etc. put up in the Ring O’ Bells.
In the summer months we will be promoting Sunday afternoon Brass Band Concerts in the garden to raise much need funds for the Brass Bands of Marple Charity Organization. You can visit our website

The next two Ring o' Bells Quiz Nights will raise money for the Friends of Marple Memorial Park, so it would be great if there was good attendance. Any money raised will be used for improvements to the park. You can see the kinds of things we've done in the past on the Friends' web site at www.marplememorialpark.org.uk

The Quiz starts at 9pm and comprises a picture round, 20 general knowledge questions and 10 audio music questions. First prize is eight drinks (which must be consumed on the night - although taking them as bottles is permitted) and second prize varies but is usually a bottled drink of some kind each.

Entry fee is £1, all of which goes to the charitable cause. There is also an "Open the Box" raffle game and a "Snowball Question" which means you may get really lucky too!
