Events / Lecture at St Martin's: The Northern Art Workers' Guild [Sat 1 February 2025]
« Last post by admin on December 23, 2024, 07:57:34 AM »
St Martin’s Low Marple Heritage Trust presents:

The Northern Art Workers' Guild: Saturday 1 February 2025, 2.30 – 4.00 with tea.

Admission free, donations welcome.

In November 2019 three scholars, Richard Fletcher, Barry Clark and Stephanie Boydell, told us how they had started research into the Northern Art Workers’ Guild, which flourished in Manchester in the years when St Martin’s was created. Five years later, they have published a book, and return to tell us about their quest to rediscover the almost forgotten NAWG.

The Marple District Centre album, dating back 54 years, is now migrated:

https://www.marple.website/photos/index.php?/category/district-centre

Marple District Centre was changed radically in the 1970s when Market Street was paved over and Hibbert Lane was extended between Church Lane and Stockport Road.

The numbered images in this album were taken by Marple UDC during these changes and the location of each shot was marked on a large plan of the area, which is also included as the first image in the album. Additional photos taken by Pete Robinson during the mid-1970s to early 1980s were provided by Eddie Ashworth in 2015. Both Eddie and Pete worked on the District Centre improvements for several years back in the day.

The Virtual History Tour of Marple and District is on the move!

The Marple Website's collection of photos, known as the Virtual History Tour, began 23 years ago, in 2001. In 2006 it was moved to a Gallery platform called Coppermine. With the help of Marple Local History Society and many others the "Virtual Tour" has grown to hold over 15,500 images that have been viewed more then 5.6 Million times.

In December 2024 migration to a newer mobile friendly platform called Piwigo began.

Migrating so many images will be a long process. While ongoing visitors will need to switch between 2nd Generation and 3rd Generation sites to access all the images available.

The new 3rd Generation site is here: https://www.marple.website/photos/

The older 2nd Generation site is here: https://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/

There are links in place on both sites so that you can move between them easily.

The following albums have been migrated to the new site at the time of this posting:

Special Offer on Marple Local History Society Membership!

It's only early in December and in days gone by it was too early to wish your friends and neighbours “Happy Christmas.” Still, the Christmas tree is up in Marple, so perhaps we can mention it. This year, instead of having a talk about Victorian Christmas or Medieval Christmas our December talk is about mobile phones!

https://www.marplelocalhistorysociety.org.uk/

Believe it or not, one of the most popular talks in the last few years was about telephone boxes. Nigel Linge, the Professor of Telecommunications at Salford University, gave us a cracking talk on these iconic pieces of street furniture in November 2022. Instead of lots of boring details about a box made of metal and glass we got a fascinating journey through history and politics which also brought in architecture and some irreverent anecdotes. The talk was so popular we have invited him back for an encore this Christmas.

But this is the season of goodwill so we want you to invite any of your friends or neighbours who enjoy an entertaining night out to come along as well. They won’t regret it. As an extra incentive we will offer them membership of the Society at a special price of £10 instead of the normal £15. Not exactly a black Friday offer but its pretty good. So, spread the word and tell people that for a tenner they can not only listen to one of the best talks of the year but also free entry to other interesting talks and invitations for trips and summer outings.

Monday night 9th December, doors open 7.15pm for 7.45pm start.

Marple Methodist Church, Church Lane

Be there and bring a friend!

Venues / Marquee Venue Opportunity at Mellor Sports Club in June 2025

Marquee Opportunities for local groups on 12th, 13th and 15th June 2025!

Next year Mellor Lacrosse Club will be celebrating 100 years since their founding. In the world of lacrosse, Mellor is a giant, winning titles and trophies in the most prestigious league in the country, as well as producing multiple players, both men and women, who have represented their country at international tournaments.

As part of their centenary celebration plans, they have booked a marquee to host a Centenary Ball on Saturday 14th June next year.

The marquee will be erected on the Mellor Sports Club car park and will be available for other events on the Thursday evening (12th), all day Friday (13th) and all day Sunday (15th).

This is a great opportunity for other local clubs, organisations or individuals to hold an event of their own in a marquee with bar, furnishings etc to suit.

If you are interested in investigating this opportunity please contact Steve Hall via mellorlax100@gmail.com or 07948533106.

Below is the car park where it will be located at the Sports Club and typical images of a similar marquee:
