This seems like a great idea. Go to http://www.supportoursoldiers.co.uk for more information:

Dear Sir or Madam

Myself and a team of other volunteers are trying to promote a Stockport Support Our Soldiers campaign to make up shoe boxes for British members of the armed forces operating in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We are trying to promote this as  a community project to get Stockport behind the British Soldiers. We are meeting the Stockport Express today to arrange the article for Wednesdays edition. We would like if members of the Stockport Community could make up shoe boxes of items to send to the Soldiers for Christmas. Below is a list of items needed. Alternatively if members of the public do not wish to make up shoe boxes they could donate just £5 on line which will send a ready made box to a British Soldier away from family and friends at Christmas time. To do this they can log on to www.supportoursoldiers.co.uk who are running the nationwide campaign.

Items suggested are:

Toiletries:  Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, roll on deodorant, wet wipes, razors, foot power, talcum powder, lip salve, sanitary protection

Savoury Snacks: Pringles, crisps, nuts, savoury rice, noodles, stock cubes, pack of soups

Sweet Snacks: Dried Fruit, short bread, small cakes, biscuits, packets of custard, condensed milk

Confectionary: travel sweet, toffee, fudge, energy sweets, lollipops, mints, chewing gum

Clothing: Socks, t-shirts, underwear

Recreation: paperback books, cards, magazines, puzzle books, travel games, pens, pencils, notebooks, sketch pads, batteries

Pharmacy: rennie, Imodium, plasters, insect repellent, sunscreen

Misc Items: boot laces, blank greeting cards, messages of support

Christmas Items: Santa hat, candy cane, tinsel, xmas pudding, present (something small and simple like key ring, toys)

If people do not want to make a complete shoe box maybe they could get together with a group of friends or work colleagues to make one or they could just donate any of the above items.

Parcels must be under 2kg and are required for no later than the 5th December to ensure delivery to Iraq and Afghanistan in time for Christmas.

We would really like Stockport to show support for our British Soldiers who so often feel forgotten by the public they protect and serve.  I am happy for my number to appear on your website should anybody wish to enquire or contribute in anyway. My number is 0161 474 3261.  We would also like community groups to get involved, for example a Stockport Scout Group are making Christmas cards with messages to send to Soldiers. We are support two regiments, the 42 Royal Marine Commandos and the Mercian Regiments (old Cheshire's) who both have links to Stockport.

If possible could you please put something on your website so members of the Marple community can see if they would like to contribute.
