Strines Chimney Demolition

What a day, certainly one I will never forget in my lifetime. I am still in shock, knowing that my daughter and I pressed the button that raised the beautyful structure to the ground.  Some say progress but I say it's a great shame to loose such a structure, being a great fan of Fred it was a dream come true to be part of this historical event though it would of been greater and more respectful to do it employing Freds method.  It was a great privilage and honour and I hold my hat off to all involved in the organisation and fight prior to it's demise.

Last night a sequence of eleven photos of Strines Chimney coming down taken by Arthur Proctor were added to the Virtual Tour.

Nice one, Dave. That's 2 bricks less that'll end up through your window!!   '> .  Joking aside, we attended last weekends chimney demolition and along with everyone else unexpectedly felt quite saddened by the loss of such a landmark; particularly as my wife's grandfather once worked at the mill, so much history gone in less than 10 seconds.

Does anyone happen to know details of the housing being planned on the site; type, style, when is the development planned to be completed, etc? More importantly, can I buy one? M

Got an answer to my own question from S.A.R.A.:

The site hasnt been sold to a house builder as yet. The developer intends to complete the demolition and site preperation before they market the land.

They should be ready to sell  in the spring, so until then, there is no one to contact in relation to this.

The Strines Chimney will be demolished on Sat 13th January 2007.

Dave Myers (of Myers Treecare) has won the raffle to press the button which will blow the chimney up and will then be taken along to Strines Recreation Ground to receive a special gift, which will be presented by Sheila Dibnah, (the late Fred Dibnahs wife).

The Chimney is set to be demolished at 2pm. S.A.R.A (Strines Area Residents Association) will be organising a special viewing area in Whitecroft Fields where you are guarenteed the very best view.

THE FIELDS ARE LIKELY TO BE MUDDY SO PLEASE WEAR SUITABLE FOOTWEAR.

Afterwards they will be providing hot food, drinks (with Bar) and entertainment at the Recreation Ground.

S.A.R.A Say: PLEASE WOULD RESIDENTS LEAVE THERE CARS AT HOME IF POSSIBLE, AS THE VILLAGE IS LIKELY TO BE VERY BUSY ON THE DAY! PEOPLE WHO ARE COMMING FROM MARPLE OR NEW MILLS DIRECTION MAY ALSO FIND IT EASIER TO MAKE USE OF THE BUS AND RAIL SERVICES.

Excellent animation Wardie, well done!

Well history was certainly made yesterday and there were so many people there with cameras that I thought we should ask them to submit their best photos or even video for the Virtual Tour. This is my own favorite so far, taken by my wife Gill. I dug out my old 35mm SLR and fired off a whole film in about 5 seconds but they are not developed yet.



If you took any good photos, not just of the chimney coming down but also events throughout the day, and you are prepared to share them with us we'd be delighted to add them to the Virtual Tour for posterity, and maybe set up a page on the main site about it too.

It was terrific - huge crowds, traffic gridlock, Hawk Green Band playing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' - the biggest thing ever to happen in Strines!    '>
