Mark has just forwarded me a photo of Mrs Edwards medallion, (I lost my copy in a computer crash) and it clearly shows that it IS one of the original coins minted in Germany and has the incorrect date. I thought it was unlike me to make a mistake!!!!

In October 2000 I wrote an article for the then Marple Mail (see homepage under Community News articles). In the feedback that ensued Mrs Edwards of Marple contacted us and showed us a medallion depicting the sinking which I incorrectly identified as one of those minted with the permission of the German govt. Today whilst visiting the Imperial War Museum North site I came across an article which makes very clear the situation surrounding the medallions, for those interested in learning more the web address is: http://www.iwm.org.uk/online/lusitan/lusi1.htm
