Police warn residents to secure their cars (Stockport)

Police are sending out a warning to motorists in Stockport to secure their vehicles following a spate of break-ins.

To address the problem officers have stepped up patrols in the areas where the most reports have been received, placing warning postcards on vehicle windscreens and posting leaflets through home letterboxes.

Now police are asking motorists to do their part. Officers say vehicles are being broken into because the doors have not been locked or people are leaving items on display that look tempting to thieves. Leaving vehicles insecure may attract more thieves to the area increasing the risk of crime.

Inspector Mark Gallichan from the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are doing everything possible to catch those responsible and we are asking the public to help us. Even an old coat left on the back seat of a vehicle is tempting for a thief as they think it may contain a mobile phone, mp3 player or purse so they will break in to see what is there. It is of no concern to them that it is going to cost you money to repair the car, so it is important to remove all temptation. This even includes leaving the glove box open so show it does not contain a sat nav or the display panel of a stereo.”

“I also understand that some people do not wish to come forward directly to the police with information about who is committing these crimes. All they need to do is call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and pass on the information they have. Crimestoppers will then pass it on to us.”
