Getting the Lottery Funding is certainly a great achievement, thank you!

Regarding the bridge's designer - we do not believe it was by Telford and were quite careful in our press release to say that it was done in the style of......

Quote
The bridge was built in 1813 for Nathaniel Wright, then owner of the Brabyns Estate, and is now a grade II listed structure. It was made by the Salford Ironworks and is of cast iron construction in the style of several bridges from the same period by the famous architect Thomas Telford. Its purpose was to provide Wright with access to his estate by carriage from Compstall, across the River Goyt.

Unfortunately the reporter picked up on the Telford name and has elaborated somewhat (as they do).

Thomas Wilson was another famous designer who used the distinctive cast iron rings featured on the Brabyns bridge, and is also featured on the site you have provided a link to, but we do not believe it was one of his either. I have discussed this with the author of the Telford site in the past when he did the feature on our bridge.

It is our belief that it was designed in the style of bridges of that time by the Engineer at Salford Ironworks - William Sherratt. We have spoken with an expert at UMist who also feels this is the most likely senario. Unfortunately there is no positive evidence at this time.

You can read more about the bridge and the information we have discovered during our research here:

Iron Bridge Booklet

Incidentally - it is often thought that Telford design THE Ironbridge in Shropshire, but he did not - so we are in good company - that was Abraham Darby III.

If you don't believe the bridge was designed by Telford ("thought to be") visit:

The great Telford designed and built over a 1000 bridges and many other civil engineering projects- a Scotsman of course!
