Canals & Railways in Marple Talk [22 September]
« Reply #1 on: August 07, 2010, 09:31:22 AM »
Canals & Railways in Marple at Evangelical Church, Queen Street, 7.30-8.45pm

Marple has two canals and two railways, all built between 1795 and 1870, and, except for the railway to Macclesfield (now a footpath), they are still in use, though the emphasis is very different.  The canals once busy with industrial loads are now for pleasure, and the railways which gave direct travel to London now provide only local travel.

The talk by Ian Moss, illustrated with colour slides, will deal with the history of our canals and railways commemorating over two hundred years of service to our community. Ian has lectured extensively on railway and canal history, being a member of the Railway & Canal Historical Society since 1960, and its National President 1996-8.
