Aqueduct Restoration

Love the photographs of the aqueduct restoration - especially the first one. Abseiling off the aqueduct: now there's an opportunity for some sponsored money-raising activity.

This is great news. I happened to cycle over the aquaduct while they were working on the other end and didn't envy them one bit - stepping over a plank "bridge" across the ice to get to the other side, then disappearing over it!

Good news that essential work is being carried out on the aqueduct. However, in my opinion, priority should be given to address the muddy section of the towpath over any plans to improve the footpath down to the river.

That section is terrible, isn't it. I contacted British Waterways about it before Christmas and this was their response:

RE: Peak Forest Canal, Rose Hill Tunnel

Thank you for your enquiry.  Our Supervisor for this area has paid a site visit and as a result of this has asked one of our Engineers to attend site to assess what is required to rectify this situation.  We hope to get any remedial work completed in the New Year.

This is hopefully the first stage in a larger project that is part of the Vision for Marple and, if funding can be raised, will include improvements to the steps and public footpath leading down from the aqueduct and passing underneath.

Work has recently started on de-vegetation of the Marple Aqueduct. This is hopefully the first stage in a larger project that is part of the Vision for Marple and, if funding can be raised, will include improvements to the steps and public footpath leading down from the aqueduct and passing underneath. By clearing some of the trees which almost completely obscure it from view, the scene could be returned to how it must have appeared to George Borrow when he first declared it "a wonder of the age". This project was first suggested on the Marple Website more than 12 years ago and it is great to see that there is now a will to do it!
