This is great news. I happened to cycle over the aquaduct while they were working on the other end and didn't envy them one bit - stepping over a plank "bridge" across the ice to get to the other side, then disappearing over it!
Good news that essential work is being carried out on the aqueduct. However, in my opinion, priority should be given to address the muddy section of the towpath over any plans to improve the footpath down to the river.
That section is terrible, isn't it. I contacted British Waterways about it before Christmas and this was their response:

Thank you for your enquiry. Our Supervisor for this area has paid a site visit and as a result of this has asked one of our Engineers to attend site to assess what is required to rectify this situation. We hope to get any remedial work completed in the New Year.
