Friends of Marple Memorial Park

2 things.Firstly memorial park I think we should have a cafe and maybe get our brass band playing in the summer. Stuff the kids when I was a kid we hung around the park never bothering people I might add. I enjoy the park alot walking my dog and yes 'concerned' picking up poo I am 36 and would enjoy some more activities in the park what about a beer festival or maybe Carver Theatre doing an outside play in the summer?
Secondly Hanburys I think we need some good quality restaurants in Marple no disrespect to the Indian and the Chinese but we only have Murillos and The Edge compared to other places i think a really upmarket curry house would be great designed like a restaurant not a curry house where you would spend the night and get dressed up not to go after a few pints for a curry but somewhere we could get dressed up and go. Upstairs would make a great cocktail bar  so come on our Indian friends if you are reading this then go for it it would bring people in from other areas aswell

I'll tell you what concerns me is comments like,

 "One day these young people are going to be my age, Do you really think they are going to give a toss about the park."

What sort of attitude is that? If we all had that sort of belief we would still be living in caves on Cobden Edge. Maybe we should cover the National Parks in houses eh? The future generations would be really grateful I'm sure.
Part of me thinks that concerned's comments are just meant to stir up debate, if that's the case you've suceeded. If not then you really need to get out more.

A first class rant!!! I like to do that too!
The one problem is that you didn't address any of the problems that you highlight. You also managed to avoid commenting on any of the points in my last posting.

Are you willing to become involved and try to actually DO something about these things instead of moaning about them. We can all list the things that are wrong with Marple but how many are willing to put their head above the parapet and try to resolve them?

My invite stands whether you are 7, 37 or 77 come to tell us your ideas and try to make a difference.

p.s. I take it you don't play chess?

Just a few points, (1) If you call 37 young then thanks, I will take it as a compliment,(2) I can just imagine having fun inthe memorial park at the min in minus 4 temps. Hey my hands may be cold and my feet frozen but dont the park look great. (3) One day these young people are going to be my age, Do you really think they are going to give a toss about the park. (4) If you were a pensioner would you go into the park to enjoy it if it was full of youths. I THINK NOT... We now live in 2004,, has anyone realised that yet, The age of technology, the internet, heck we even have cars and mobile phones. All I see on this marple website is pooh subjects, chess clubs, etc...Marple is like the Titanic....And the band played while the ship sank........And they played chess in the park while the young hang out and get stoned.........Thank god you cant swear on this thing or it would be all deleted...

You may have a somewhat one-sided view of what Marple needs, there are other people living in Marple than the young variety, but yes, I agree the young do need more facilities. That is what 'Friends of Memorial Park' is about, we want views and participation from young and old. We want to improve the area for ALL ages.

Why don't you come to the next meeting and tell us what YOU think we need? I have already been in contact with Andrea Nyland the Area Youth Worker to try to find what the young people feel should be improved but to have a real life YOUNG person attend would be great!
So why not come to Marple Library on 23rd Feb at 6.30, have a whiff of our well rotted manure and be sure to bring some roses!!!

WHY WHY WHY must we live in the past and memorials. Surely to God we must be thinking of the future, And how best to make Marple a better place to live. I think we spend to much time with things we cant change as opposed to those we can, Cant we give the young people of Marple somewere to go. A place to hang out and be themselves. A place that is warm and gets them off the streets. a place to call there own. If Marple wants to survive as wonderfull place to live it has to wake up, smell the manure. and start planting some roses.....

The information you provide by completing the survey will be most useful to the Friends, enabling them to ensure their efforts are directed towards the things that most people want to see in the park.

Next meeting of the Friends of Memorial Park will be held at 6.30 pm on Monday 15th December at Marple Library.

Anyone with an interest in the park is welcome to come along.

The meeting on Monday night was very well attended and people were keen to set up a friends group. The major issue for many of the attendees, particularly those who live near the park, or use it regularly, was the anti-social behaviour of young people, especially at night.

The next meeting has been arranged for 17 November, when the process of forming a friends group will commence.

More information should appear on the site in the near future as we have offered free web space / pages to publicise the new group.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park
An open meeting is to held in Marple Library on 13th. October to explore the formation of a "Friends" group for Memorial Park, Marple- from 6.45pm. until 7.45pm.
The meeting will explain what a "Friends" group is about and what may be achieved if such a group is created from within our community.
