Somewhere to park your bike I suppose while you go for an abseil down.

That's just planted a seed that isn't going to go away now! Thanks prestbury - watch that space.....

A lot of thought must have gone into the design that is in keeping with the architecture of the aqueduct.....NOT

An article on the Canal and River Trust web site shows that installation of the railings on the Aqueduct is due to at the end of this month.

Here's a photo of a section of railings in the workshop:

And here's a link to the article.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but planning permission has now been applied for the railings to the offside of the aqueduct.

Details available at SMBC http://planning.stockport.gov.uk/PlanningData-live/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=dates&keyVal=OPF953PJHF700

Closing date for comment is Thursday 8th  June 2017

Sorry you are right, my comment was not in the best of taste and could have been phrased better - I think Marpleexile puts it better than I did. Apologies for any distress caused. Likewise, I hope the youngster makes a full recovery

I agree it was heartless - youngsters can be reckless and thoughtless.  I hope he makes a full recovery and wish him well for the future.

I certainly don't wish harm on the lad, and too hope he makes a full and fast recovery. However, whilst the "no one made him jump" comment was a bit heartless, it's nevertheless true.

Reckless and thoughtless is trying to jump over the canal at a section where the worst that will happen is you get wet feet, or overshoot into a bush on the far side.

Trying it where the worst that can happen is you fall 90m down into the valley is just stupid, plain and simple.

I came along the canal on my commute home last night, just before 6 pm. I was at first impressed to see two PCSOs on the aqueduct then intrigued to see at least half a dozen police cars and even more fire engines.

Still not a supporter of the idea of railings on there. No one made him jump.

The boy is a friend of my daughters, he is very lucky. We really do need railings on there. I found the no-one made him jump comment a little heartless.

Hope the boy makes a good recovery.
Knew something serious was happening, somewhere locally, due to all the emergency vehicles coming up through Marple.

Shame there is not a handrail for the new steps.

I've sent my comments. Have you?

If anyone has a view on this today is the last day that you can make it count.

The C&RT have advised that they will also review the comments made in this thread but still best to email them via:

 https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/about-us/consultations/current-consultations

Here is the IWA's response to the consultation (who are very much against the addition of the fence):
