For about 10 years now I have been reporting potholes via the Fill That Hole Web Site, this and other similar websites check the location of the pothole and report it to the relevant Authority. This is very useful when you don't know which authority is responsible, so for example if the hole is probably outside the Stockport area, then is it Derbyshire or Cheshire if it is local, or any other authority if you come across one elsewhere.

Last year I became aware that the most Council's, including Stockport, changed their reporting system which prevented Fill That Hole etc reports from being directed to the relevant authority.

Currently for Stockport go to   https://www.stockport.gov.uk/start/report-a-pothole-damaged-road-or-pavement

For Cheshire go to https://www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/highways_and_roads/highway-services/road-condition-and-repairs/road-condition-and-repairs.aspx

Stockport have said they will try to allow Fill that Hole acces to their reporting system, but can't guarantee it, meanwhile the problem has been taken to the Ministry of Transport, but don't hold your breath.

However if you think our roads are an an appalling condition, then this is one of the reasons where hundreds if not thousands of complaints never got to their destination. so you will have to use the relevant Council's web site if you know which is responsible.

Or raise it with one of the three local councillors that represents you. Then, at least there's an audit trail when they raise it with the council officers.

Cheshire East has a map on its website showing what Cheshire East covers
https://maps.cheshireeast.gov.uk/ce/webmapping

Every council should have that really.  But in the meantime, MySociety has it for every council area.
https://mapit.mysociety.org/area/2540.html

Postcodes aren't a massively reliable way of doing things as postcodes only exist for the benefit of Royal Mail.  And that means they may not respect other administrative boundaries.

how you know which is responsible without the definitive map, I don't know
The postcode area usually changes when you cross from Stockport into Cheshire, Tameside, Derbyshire, Manchester.

For about 10 years now I have been using a PotHole reporting web set - Fill that Hole, there are others - to report potholes and other defects.  Its great advantage was that you described the location of the Pot Hole and the web site sent a message to the appropriate authority. Very useful when you don't know which authority is responsible.

I have now realised that for several months, if not years, Stockport MBC and probably many other authorities have effectively blocked these messages.  The problem has reached Government level, so let's hope a replacement facility will be provided quickly.

Until then the link for Stockport is https://www.stockport.gov.uk/start/report-a-pothole-damaged-road-or-pavement , and for Cheshire East it is  https://www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/highways_and_roads/highway-services/road-condition-and-repairs/road-condition-and-repairs.aspx .,  though how you know which is responsible without the definitive map, I don't know, and I have just looked for a link to Derbyshire road repairs and the site is unavailable.
