It may be a good idea for Stockport Council to offer reduced rates to encourage visitors to Stockport's attractions but it would help if visitors were also offered directions of how to get there. For many years I have been trying to persuade the Council to sign routes from the Rosehill end of the Middlewood Way to the attractions in the area, but they appear very reluctant to do so. After recent pressure some Notice Boards have appeared in the Memorial Park. Yes they mention Chadkirk and Etherow Country Park, but give no indication of what is there to encourage people to visit them. Then even if you get to Chadkirk Chapel, for instance, which had one of the best Audio Visual Displays I have seen, for several years now this display has been incomplete and complaints to those responsible brings no result.  The same applies to Vernon Park Museum where the lighting is so dim that you soon give up and go elsewhere. It is fortunate in these instances that it is free to go in, as even at a reduced rate I would be very annoyed for having paid only to see what are poorly maintained exhibits.

Stockport Council’s heritage service has launched its own answer to the credit crunch. You can now buy a ‘Combined Entry Ticket’ so you can visit more attractions, for less!

With the cost of living rising and bills soaring to new heights, many people have found most of their disposable income has diminished, much to the detriment of family outings and holidays. In a bid to combat the financial squeeze, visitors can now visit Staircase House, Bramall Hall and the Air Raid Shelters for as little as £10 for adults and £5 for concessions and children, with a group of four (any four persons) able to visit all three attractions for just £25.

The three venues not only offer tours around these unique historic sites, but provide a range of children’s, family and adult activities to take part in.

Councillor Shan Alexander, Executive Member for Leisure, said: "We are all feeling the pinch of the current economic climate and this ticket is the ideal way to make the most of the excellent cultural attractions on your doorstep, whilst not breaking the bank."

The recently launched combined ticket is available to buy at the applicable sites. The current cost to enter any one of the three venues is £3.95 for an adult and £2.95 for a concession or child, meaning a group of four adults could make a massive saving of £22.40 using this combined entry ticket.

Did you know......

There are also five attractions in Stockport which you can visit absolutely FREE!

Chadkirk Chapel, located in Romiley, this restored chapel is set within the peaceful and picturesque grounds of Chadkirk Country Estate. There’s a woodland walk and a lawn ideal for a picnic.

Hat Works, visit the only museum in the country dedicated to the hatting industry. Even if you’ve visited before, there’s always a new exhibition and a variety of activities to explore.

Stockport Art Gallery, the art gallery runs a connected programme of events and activities that run alongside its main exhibitions. Well worth a re-visit if you’re looking for something to do.

Stockport Story Museum, located in the centre of Stockport, there is a vast array of artefacts ranging from prehistoric times to modern day. The museum includes a temporary exhibition space which is currently showing the Stockport County FC exhibition.

Vernon Park Museum, stroll around the surrounding park and walkway, which overlooks the Derbyshire hills and then pop into the Vernon café for a lovely cup of tea!
For Leisure Key holders, all Council heritage and cultural attractions are now FREE to enter.
