Maybe you should call his bluff, Henrietta?  There are other dentists around, and I believe some are accepting NHS patients.  A few years ago the Marple Bridge dentist announced to all his patients that he was pulling out of the NHS, and if they wanted to remain with him, they would have to do so as private patents.

Then a few weeks later he changed his mind.........  ;)
few of them are finding people cant afford private and going back to  N HS although nhs is no longer cheap.
the one at romiley always been NHS .thats a big practice about five dentists there .

Anyone got a good dentist recommendation?  Went to 32 Whites about 3 years ago and did not like it there

Sorry to hear you weren’t happy at 32 Whites. I’ve been going there for many years and had nothing but exceptional service. Good luck in getting your gnashers sorted!
I'm rather miffed. My dentist (not one mentioned here), to whom I've gone twice yearly as a private patient for over 30 years has an NHS dentist in the practice and there is a notice in reception saying they are currently able to take on new NHS patients. As I am now retired and in somewhat reduced circumstances I asked if I could transfer to the NHS chap and was told I couldn't. If I wanted to stay with the practice I would have to continue as a private patient.

The dentist in Marple Bridge also does private work including cosmetic dentistry if you ask.

I go to Mr McGrogan on Stockport Road and he is great. There is a new dentist there too, don't know his name, he bought the practice, his wife works there too. He seems good too.
