Correct, if they want it and you don't, and it saves you a trip, sorted. Same as the old 'rag and bone' man I hear people talk about.  Operators do however need to stay on the right side of the law - like we all do.

It's a shame that there are few people within this 'trade' that feel it acceptable to steal - and working for a company on the receiving end of things, it's a vastly greater problem (and cost) than a couple of man hole covers!

:-)

p.s. good job the scrap man moved that swing or you'd have been prosecuted for fly tipping!  ;-)

Do you have an actual example of when a bin has been left if it were 6 inches within the drive? Or is it just a good story to circulate to undermine the Local Authority

Our bin wasn't emptied because of the lid being ajar, annoyingly it was because a college kid had opened our bit to put a can in it.

It's not difficult to undermine the local authority when they are filled with jobsworths and cost too much. Cuts? Not going far enough if you ask me

I’m more than happy with the service offered by these guys. After dismantling a couple of kid’s metal swings one Sunday evening, I left the whole lot on the pavement and, as expected, it was gone by the next morning. Didn’t even wake the missus up and she’s a light sleeper (and was on the look-out to make sure our wrought-iron garden gate didn’t end up on the van “by accident”).

Compare and contrast with the disposal service you’re paying hundreds of pounds each year for, where leaving your wheelie-bin six inches inside your own property, or filling it so the lid isn’t snug, results in the contents remaining there until the Environmental Health Officer turns up three weeks later.

As long as they have a Waste Carrier Licence then they are allowed to drive around - I'm pretty sure though, one of our Neighbourhood Police team told me the music and 'touting' for scrap is an offence.

I read recently that it is, in fact, theft to take something from a skip without permission.

Today we had a scrap metal van (blue and yellow) playing music go down our road for the first time. I was not very impressed that they attempted to help themselves to things out of a neighbours skip, then cheekily slowed down at my partners trailer to have a good look over it as they drove past.
I know I should not judge but they did not look the most trusting of characters and I would ask/warn others to be very vigilant over the next few days i.e. locking up trailers/padlocking back gates, etc.
