I use Ridings too... but as an additional recommendation... Nicola is fantastic with kids!  Shes managed to persuade all 4 of mine at various stages of their life ( youngest being 4) to go in to the examination without me which is no mean feat in itself!!

I've used Ridings regularly and can recommend them. Used Specsavers once but a slimy young sales person there persuaded me that I needed glasses with a non-reflective coating (about £30 extra) "because I worked with computer monitors". I found the glasses I received unpleasant to wear - the advice was absolute rubbish, but probably earned him a nice commission.

I stick with a local optician now because I trust them and it supports local business.

So you took them back and complained did you . They don't work on commission .

No I didn't take them back - partly because I thought I'd get used to them, and partly because it wasn't convenient to take yet more time off work to do it (I used the Manchester Arndale branch). When I replaced them about 2 years later, a different optician told me that the non-reflective coating was only essential if the prescription was strong, which mine was not. Commission or not, I definitely think Specsavers sold me an unnecessary add-on to up the price.

Having used Specsavers once I didn't think the quality of their frames was very good. Both pairs broke irreparably after less than a year's use (and I'm not rough on my glasses - they spend most of their time in my bag). When asked to repair them Specsavers said they wouldn't [/i] (Note not "couldn't" but "wouldn't") do so and I would have to by new frames and lenses. Needles to say, I walked away.

I'm currently using Boots (late Dolland & Aitchison) in Glossop. No hard sell and I bought two pairs with robust frames under their 2 for £79 scheme

With regard to the coatings - in the past I have had anti-scratch and anti-glare coatings on my glasses. Seemed like a good idea but unfortunately they made the glass incredibly difficult to clean - they just smear even with cleaning fluid - and I would never have them again.

Ridings is very good along with John Glover in Romiley. Glasses at Asda Hyde are very reasonable too.

Nowadays you don't have to get your glasses from the optician who does the eye test. So you can shop around once you have a prescription. So you could use a local optician for the test - I've used Ridings for the last few years and they have been good.
