Towpath still "closed" even though the website says until the 13th. Perhaps they're just keeping it that way now until the next closure on Monday to repair the leak, but not great communication... https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/2653/bridge-19-bridge-22

Meanwhile just outside the closed stretch near Bridge 23 this must now be the worst patch on the entire Peak Forest... :-\

I think you will find they will be draining a section of the canal somewhere between bridges 19 (Brick bridge) and 22 (TurfLea Bridge), dependant on where the local 'plug' is. Obviously the canal will be closed for navigation during this time.

Unless they are using some temporary dam a fair length of the canal will have to be drained to do the work. Their planned schedule is during the Stockport Primary Schools Easter holiday, but it shouldn't interfere with the Locks Festival, which is in July.

On a separate note the CRT has closed off (in theory, if not entirely in practice) the Macclesfield Canal towpath as it enters Marple, so it is quite hard to walk any of Marple's canals at present.

Whoops! Slightly bigger job; apparently the canal has sprung a leak:
https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/2653/bridge-19-bridge-22
Does that mean the stretch will have to be drained and will that affect the locks festival as access will be limited?

Towpath currently closed (at least, when the workmen are watching) at various points between Marple and Strines; mainly at the Marple end at present (near Brickbridge).

There is also a not-very-effectively closed-off 400m or so of towpath near Disley, where little work seems to have been done since Christmas; the swing bridge in the vicinity is also out of action.

The contractors for the Canal and River Trust seem to have been given carte blanche to close off arbitrary sections of towpath as and when they choose to do the work. The section near Disley should have been finished in mid-January, but clearly wasn't. Most walkers and runners seem to be ignoring the flimsy grids that are put up to close the towpath off to the public - and reasonably so: there is no work going on.

Like admin I can't understand why the CRT site seems to show an affected towpath in the region of the locks. Is there really a Brick CHANGE Bridge?

The major item that needs maintenance is the complete collapse of a large section of canal wall on the way down to the aqueduct. That hasn't been touched - they just keep bending the road round it!

I'm also getting confused as to why we need both a Canal and River Trust AND an Inland Waterways Association.

whoops = closure starts at *PLUCKSBRIDGE* (where the lane from the Romper to Roman Bridge crosses the canal) not Brickbridge (much closer to Marple, just near the Forces & Social club at the Marina)

Is it me or is this all very confusing? The map on this link indicates the closure starts around lock 11 next to Marple Memorial Park all the way up Lockside to beyond Brick Bridge.
The link itself says Bridge 19 to Strines Aqueduct and the notice says it starts and ends at Bridge 19, Brick Change Bridge  :-\

Would anyone be able to say if any work has started regarding this closure?
I saw four workmen walking along the towpath earlier this afternoon about 400 metres south of Brickbridge Road as though discussing the work involved.

I hear this morning that the canal towpath is now closed south of Marple from Brickbridge through to Disley. Checking the CRT website (https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/) it looks like the canal towpath around top lock will be closing soon too!

Marple Aqueduct at the bottom of the locks will remain closed until the end of March

Still nothing listed on the C&RT website.

The notice above I also only first saw in late December at Plucksbridge Road, and there appeared to be nothing posted actually at either end of the proposed closure (Bricksbridge/Strines) which is a bit useless.

Now up on the CRT site

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/1893/between-bridge-24-woodend-lift-bridge-and-bridge-26-dryhurst-bridge-redhouse-lane

running a bit late though, dats on there are nov to early jan!

That is a different section of the canal, nbt. The one discussed in this topic is much nearer Marple.

Wouldn't it great if SMBC routinely placed notices like these on this very website (and, indeed on Streetlife, which appears to have started well). People shouldn't have to go round taking photos on their mobile phone, for gawd's sake....
