The music appreciation sessions at Semitone Studios start again on Friday 18 January.

For the next few weeks Peter Eccles will discuss pieces which are about to be played at the Bridgewater Hall.

This week's piece on 18 January is Ralph Vaughan Williams' Sinfonia Antartica, his seventh symphony, which makes use of the music he wrote for the 1947 film Scott of the Antarctic.  This is due to be played by the Halle conducted by Mark Elder on Thursday 24 January.  The first performance was on 14 January 1953 by the Halle in the Free Trade Hall conducted by John Barbirolli.

All welcome.  10.30 am to 12.00 pm.  Admission £5.

Want to know more about classical music?

These weekly sessions started again on Friday mornings from 10.30 to 12.00 started again last month.  The people who have been to the sessions so far have seemed to enjoy them.  The sessions are all independent so it is possible just to drop in for the odd week.

This week I plan to look at Ludwig van Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, one of the most remarkable pieces of music ever written and quite unlike anything that had been written before.  I will say a bit about the background to the piece and how it came to be written and then introduce each movement.  We can share reactions to each movement after we listen to it.

The location is Semitone Studios, 130 Stockport Road (opposite the Texaco filling station).  The cost is £5 for each session.
