Hello Jack
You may be refering to Robin Hoods Picking Rods that are situated on the moors above Chisworth just off Gun Road. Take the footpath (Cown Edge Way) going East towards Far Slack Farm.
The Web site below will supply you with all the details

There's a "Bow Stones" marked on the map, near Bowstonegate, which is up towards Lyme Park.
It's not Marple. but it's only a few miles away.
See map here

Some 60 years ago my father took me to Marple Bridge(?) in search of, what he termed, "The Bow Stones". He believed that some form of evidence existed in this area to indicate where local archers sharpened their arrow heads - presumably block(s) of stone still bearing the grooves resulting from this activity.
Any information regarding this would be much appreciated.
