We tried cycling along the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals from Marple towards Poynton New Mills but found the path too narrow to avoid people.  The path towards Romiley is better.  There are only a few narrow bits before you get to the steps near the tunnel.  We've used that route to get to Aldi on our bikes.  Killing two birds with one stone.

I presumed the CRT were trying to discourage long cycle rides and big walks.   Fact is that towpaths are narrow, with not much space for distancing.  And because they are generally pleasant places, people want to use them for their exercise.   Too many people probably.  Hence the signs

That’s good news and very welcome - well done Marple Golf Club! Over at Mellor Golf Club they have not done this, but actually they don’t need to because the course is criss-crossed by public footpaths anyway.

The blue signs put up by the CRT on the canal towpaths are rather odd. They say ‘strictly for local use only’ but no-one knows what that means. Are you supposed to live locally? Or are you not supposed to walk far?

MARPLE GOLF COURSE - I’d like to personally thank Marple Golf Course for the notices put up on the footpath encouraging people to use the course - subject to keeping off the greens. At a time of national crisis it is important that people can get out for a daily exercise in uncrowded spaces and allow families and others to keep healthy and sane. Some other organisations (such as CRT) have been less welcoming, so the gesture is very community spirited.
