Marple Website online Adventure Film Festival

With today's additions the Marple Website Adventure Film Festival has now shared 50 short films on a great variety of subjects and that seems a good point to bring the regular daily updates to a close. I hope some of you have enjoyed a few minutes escape each day and there is nothing to stop you continuing to find similar films on YouTube or Vimeo yourself. Of course you are welcome to share your discoveries with others here if you find anything really good. I may continue to share the occasional film myself in the future but for now this is the last daily update from me.

Solstice: A tribute to the shortest and coolest days of the year when the sun arcs low over the horizon and ice crystals linger in the air. The days skiers love more than any other.

Lily Shreds Trailside: Lily the dog, doing what she loves best, chasing bikes.

During my ongoing search for the ultimate surfing video I came across this inspirational short film by Mark Tipple:

Duct Tape Surfing: 18 years ago a slight lapse in concentration crushed Pascale's dreams of surfing. With the help of a family friend and a roll of duct tape; she can now call herself a surfer.

Today we're taking another look at a couple of characters we've already met:

In Industrial Revolutions we see child-minder Danny Macaskill take his incredible bike skills into an industrial train yard and some derelict buildings.

And as that's pretty short, here's another with the likeable Aussie Beau Miles, this time attempting to do Africa by Kayak! In 2007, Beau Miles attempted to paddle the 4000kms from one side of Africa to the other. Starting in Mozambique and continuing along the South African coast Beau allowed 5 months to complete the voyage. With him for over half the journey was Jared Sharples of New Zealand. Together the pair experienced the magnificent coast until Jared, crippled with sickness, left the expedition. Beau paddled alone for 6 weeks, experiencing for the first time in his life, a truly nomadic, solo existence. Battling huge surf, Beau only completed 2000kms of the original plan after realising that his trip wasn't about kilometres gained but rather the quality of the experience.

Silence: In 2017 Adam Ondra, a professional rock climber and currently one of the best climbers in the world, made a little piece of climbing history when he climbed his project in the spectacular Hanshelleren Cave in Norway. The route, later named Silence, received a new grade of 9c and became the hardest route in the world.

More inspiration from the older generation today:

Edges: At 90 years old, Yvonne Dowlen was still ice skating at least five days a week. She first laced up her skates on Evergreen Lake in Colorado and rose to fame as an international performer in the Ice Capades. She never officially retired, continuing to skate in figure skating competitions until she was 90 years old. Two days after this film was completed, and just before her 91st birthday, Yvonne passed away. Her family said that she had 'the best last day'-- skating on the ice and living out her lifelong passion. Edges is a celebration of longevity and resilience.

Today's offering is Can't Ski Vegas: a different take on a stag do! Quite a contrast to yesterday.

The scenery is stunning as usual so watch in full screen if you can.

Here's a fascinating film about a man who has chosen a life of isolation but I think it only scratches the surface of the reasons why:

TARFALA: Far north of the arctic circle, right next to Sweden's highest mountain, one man has chosen to spend his life as a caretaker of a lonely hiking hut. What does a journey to find happiness look like, when life is not shared with friends and loved ones?

Two more for today:

Chasing The Sublime: Why do we put ourselves into the path of discomfort and risk? What drives us to get too cold and too tired, to battle with fear, in the name of adventure? Follow the originators of The Outdoor Swimming Society, ‘swim twins’ Kate Rew and Kari Furre, in this hauntingly beautiful glimpse at the physicality of UK cold water swimming, as two friends set out to chase the sublime.

Give me Five - The Flying Frenchies: The First BASE jump XRW between 4 Wingsuiters and a speerider around Chamonix / Mont Blanc. A world first!

Two short ones today, including the first to bring a tear to my eye: For the Love of Mary:

First Ever Mountain Bike Descent of Corbet's Couloir: Corbet's Couloir is one of the most legendary and challenging ski runs in the world. In the spring of 2017, Cam McCaul and Casey Brown attempted the first ever Mountain Bike descent of the double black diamond ski run.

A couple of short contrasting films today, bedlam and serenity comes to mind!

Bedlam first with Drainage Ditch Kayaking: "This is sketch. I don't like this at all." Rush Sturges and Ben Marr decide to kayak a drainage ditch in Lions Bay, British Columbia. It's a 800+ meter descent, with top speeds of 45mph.

Now calm down again with Sun Dog: In the snow-capped peaks overlooking Bariloche, Argentina, Refugio Frey is the only protection from the ravaging winds, drawing wanderers of all sorts to its doors. When a dog named Conga arrives and leads skier Santiago Guzman into the hills with her infectious energy, the windswept landscape becomes a backdrop for the pure joy of two mountain souls sharing a day in the wild.
