Our last Task Day of 2011 yesterday was quieter in terms of number of volunteers but still achieved a great deal and it's been another successful year. Read about them here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days.html

With the council having to make increased cost savings over the coming years and the proposed transfer of Parks Staff to SSK the role of Friends groups will become even more important if the standards of our parks are to be maintained, let alone improved as we have been doing.

If anyone is interested in helping out in our park we'd love to hear from you.

It was a lovey sunny day for our special Remembrance weekend Task Day and it's a good job we decided to do this as we discovered that the handrails on the memorial had been vandalised overnight. It's hard to find the words to express our contempt for this kind of act but at least we were in a position to do something about it and were able to carry out a temporary repair.

We had another great response from our volunteers at short notice and people attending the Remembrance Service should be able to see the results. As well as removing leaves and hoeing the flower beds we painted a litter bin that had been desperate for a coat of paint and cleared the leaves all the way down the main drive into the park. It was particularly good to have families with children helping out on a beautiful autumn day. Thank you everyone for your help.

Our last Task Day of 2011 is on Saturday 26 November and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 1 pm.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves if you have them. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

This month we have to thank Marple Garden Centre for the donation of plants that were added to the War Memorial beds and the Sensory Garden during yesterday's task day.

A beautiful day in the park yesterday when, amongst other things we planted a large number of rockery plants, parsley and strawberries provided by local gardeners Les and Jean White, for which we are very grateful. You will often see Les and Jean at local car boot sales selling the things they grow on their allotment but they gave all this to Friends of the Park for free  ;D

A quieter turn-out for last Saturday's Task Day but we still got lots of stuff done and then filled up with butties at the Civic Society celebrations in the afternoon!

A very rewarding task day today as we made great in-roads into planting up our five adopted ornamental flower beds. The Rainbows and Beavers are also getting on well with theirs too and all of a sudden the park is looking quite different. A big thank you to all the volunteers who turned up and worked so hard to improve their park. Read more on the Friends of the Park web site:

http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/projects/saving-the-flowerbeds.html

The next scheduled task day in the park on Saturday 25 June is a special one that coincides with National Civic Day and Marple Civic Society's 50th Anniversary celebrations. The plan is many local groups will work on their chosen project/community work in various locations from 9.30am - 12.30pm on the day and then make their way to Memorial Park in time for a picnic in the park at 1.00pm - 3.00pm.

Of course Friends of Memorial Park will already be there for our task day and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm before joining MCS in celebrating their 50th in the afternoon.

A very rewarding task day yesterday with many new volunteers attending for the first time. Unfortunately the plants for the flowerbeds have not arrived yet so the large shrub beds near to the entrance were given a good make-over.

Our next scheduled task day is Saturday 30 April, although if the plants arrive in the next week or so we may have an extra one to get the planting done. We'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 1 pm.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves if you have them. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Thought we were going to be rained-off yesterday but things worked out better than expected and we got quite a bit done in the park. Unfortunately the wet did stop us getting stuck into the flowerbeds the way we'd intended but we did manage a bit of work on them.

Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us on our next task day, which is Saturday 26th March. We'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 1 pm.
