Two batches of photos have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning - one features the demolition of Woodville Hall in 1994, and the other Turf Lea and Marple Ridge. It's interesting, and a little sad, to do a search for "Woodville" and compare these photos with the ones took by Ray Noble in 1993.

More photos from Marple Local History Society Archives have been uploaded to the Virtual Tour this morning. These are generally of Stockport Road or central Marple area and topically include some of the beginnings of the Co-Op on its present site:

Several existing images have also been replaced with better copies:

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=657
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=754
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=827

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=783
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=788

The first of the above is of the Union Rooms (Regent Cinema) and that elusive lodge at the entrance to Memorial Park is shown fairly clearly, which I hadn't noticed on the earlier version.

And finally, some photos of the Mayor's annual trip on New Horizons have been added to their 30th Birthday album:

My apologies to Ludworth School - I upgraded to a new PC a few weeks ago and in the process over-looked these images sent by them of their 2011 Swimathon. I've belatedly added them to the Swimathon album created last year  :-[

Several images from Marple Local History Society Archives covering the Rose Hill area of Stockport Road have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning, including a couple of tantalising glimpses of the elusive Rose Hill House.

See http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0

Some photos of the widening works at Dan Bank taken by Arthur, a couple of shots of the Norfolk Arms by David Burridge and a c1907 family shot taken at Roman Bridge that looks its age have been added to the Tour this afternoon.

Another of the Marple Local History Society videos featuring local people talking about their memories has been uploaded to the Virtual Tour. This one is of Barbara Hambleton, who moved to Marple bridge in 1936 at the age of 17, talking in 1996 to Gordon Mills as he filmed her.

The 28 minute VHS video has been converted to digital format and uploaded in three segments to make it easier for visitors to view without having to start at the beginning every time.

A selection of photos of Marple Bridge and Brabyns Brow from Marple Local History Society Archives have been added to the Tour this morning. I've attempted to weed out the duplicates but apologies if I've missed any. http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0

Noel Brindley has been doing a great job of adding comments to many of the photos in the Virtual Tour but so far he's the only one to have done so. Please don't forget that by registering (with your proper name) you can add your personal comments and recollections to the images in the albums.

Some new photos of crashes on Brabyns Brow from Marple Local History Society Archives have been added to the Virtual Tour this evening:

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=-42

Plus the following have been updated with new copies:
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=139
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=359
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pid=2867

Here's a report of a crash in 1923 (not shown in the photos) from the Hyde Peak Reporter:

RUNAWAY MOTOR HITS SHOP
An accident of an extraordinary character occurred on Brabyns Brow on Monday. Mr Wilfred Woodhouse of Stockport Road. Marple was driving a motor car down the Brow about 7.15pm when the back axle broke and he lost control and had to leap for his life. The car went down the steep incline at a great speed, zig-zagging as it went along. It then crashed into the shop of Miss Wood, draper & newsagent, at the bottom of the Brow.
It knocked a great hole in the building and covered the inside of the shop with dust. The spare wheel of the motorcar broke away from its fastening and was sent whirling across the road and it entered the lobby of the Midland Hotel, and struck the door and burst it open. Mr Jubb, the licensee, was struck by the woodwork of the door. The motorcar was badly smashed. The windscreen was broken and the ironwork was bent, twisted and broken. Fortunately there were no very serious injuries. (HPR 3.11.1923)
