The Virtual Time Tour of Marple

The last 15 images from the History Society's folder that focuses mainly on Church Lane have been added to the tour this morning. Unfortunately the quality of some of them is not brilliant - many are from photocopies rather than originals - but that doesn't seem to be a good enough reason to omit them.

It doesn't take long to get answers round here! Thanks to Ray Noble we now know exactly where that private car park that was confusing me was located. It was pretty much in the middle of what is now Hibbert Lane, see the two photos below. Notice the circular "thing" at the apex of the garage on the right - amazingly it is still there. Also the down pipes and soil pipes at the back of the news agents on the left all tie up nicely. So the houses in the middle are the ones demolished to make way for the road. Well done Ray!

A dozen new images from Marple Local History Society's archives have been added this morning. These mostly feature Church Lane and there are several of the junction of Church Lane and Hibbert Lane before the houses between there and Stockport Road were demolished to make way for the extension of Hibbert Lane. There is one picture of a car park that I'm not sure about the location of. Can anyone help?

New photos taken by Arthur Procter on the Virtual Tour tonight include Breast Cancer Awareness day at Bare Necessities on 30 October, the closure celebrations at House of Flowers after 40 years trading in Marple and some from his own exhibition that finished yesterday. Put your feet up Arthur!

Four images provided to Marple Local History Society by Marshall Shaw have been added to the Tour tonight. These include a rare one of Marple Recreation Ground showing what must be the very first playground equipment ever installed there.

Some photos of Frank Tunstall and his wife and family have been added to the Virtual Tour this evening. Frank was caretaker at Marple Hall up until 1932. Until these images were provided by Barbara Kay (Frank was her Great-Uncle) there was only one photo of him at the hall, one of his wife and several of their children, so it's great to have them. There was also a postcard of the hall sent by Frank and his wife Rosalind to his family in Warrington.

Barbara understands that Rosalind Tunstall (nee Wallis) suffered from depression (as we would know it now) after the birth of their second child and was placed into a private institution and never came out. She also understands that Rosie's family were the Wallis's of the Manchester outfitters fame and it was they who paid for her care. If anyone has any information about this then it would be great to pass it on to Barbara.

A new album has been added to the Virtual Tour this evening with a few photos of Marple Local History Society's 1996 exhibition featuring Marple Hall. These are the last from the current batch of folders that I have from Marple Local History Society's Archives and I will hopefully swap them for some new ones in the next week or so to continue uploading and making them available on-line. I always look forward to a new batch of files as I have no idea what will be next!

A series of postcards mainly featuring the Chadkirk Estate that have been newly donated to Marple Local History Society Archives have been added to the tour this morning. Many of the cards have George VI stamps on but unfortunately the postmarks are unreadable so they can't be dated more accurately.

The Virtual Tour has been updated this morning with some images of Marple Dale Nursing Home / Nab Top Sanatorium from Marple Local History Society Archives. The photos of the remains of the sanatorium are all very similar and rather depressing so I've only uploaded enough to give a flavour. If there is anyone with a personal interest in seeing all of the photos then once I've returned the folder to MLHS they will be able to see them by arrangement with the society.

On a lighter note, I've also uploaded a great photo from Ray Noble of Marple Prize at practice in 1965. See if you can recognise a well known local pub landord in his pre-beer-drinking days.

A great pic from Ray Noble of wife Beryl and the rest of the very successful ladies darts team at the Sportman at Strines in around 1963 has been added to the tour this morning.

Also one of the most frequently viewed images on the tour - a map of the site of Marple Hall that helps to orientate yourself when looking at the photos - has been replaced with a version that shows more buildings to the west side (barn and stables area). It resolves some of the confusion that I had about certain of the photos, so thanks to Axel Thomas for that:
