Another Marple Website Virtual History Tour First!

I have just finished uploading the first of several Marple Local History Society videos of local people talking about their memories. This one is of Tom Oldham, who was born in Mellor in 1910, talking in 1997 to Gordon Mills and Stanley Knott as they filmed him.

The 54 minute VHS video has been converted to digital format and uploaded in five segments to make it easier for visitors to view without having to start at the beginning every time.

As this is the first of these it is a little bit experimental and I would appreciate any feedback on your experience of viewing the files - hopefully you history buffs will enjoy!

Over the last week or so the Virtual Tour software has been upgraded to the latest version, which has been quite involved but is now complete except for a few tweaks that I still need to make.

Although you probably won't notice much difference at the moment the upgrade will now allow me to introduce some new features and options that were not available before and I'll announce these as they are enabled.

In the meantime, I've now uploaded over 30 Carnival images that Ray Noble sent in after digging through his bottomless drawer of Carnival snaps through the ages! Many thanks Ray, sorry for the delay but I couldn't put them on-line until the upgrade was finished.

PS - one thing you may notice is the improved film-strip below the large image view, which now allows you to scroll through them.

Twenty images from a Marple Local History folder entitled "People Unamed" have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning. They're a mixed (but very interesting) bag and it's been tricky deciding which albums to add them to but I've done my best!

Four images from Marple Local History Society Archives feauring Marple Metal Products during WW2 have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning. Marple Metal Products Engineering Works was at the junction of Church Lane / Hibbert Lane near to the Hatters Arms. It was formerly the Gem Cinema and later the GPO building.

If you know more about this or if you recognise any of the people in the photos, please let me know.

A brand new album has been added to the Tour this morning featuring photographs of Park & Paterson's foundry that was situated on Cross Lane. There are some great images in this collection from Marple Local History Society Archives but unfortunately only one of them is dated. So if you can provide any information that would enable more of them to be dated it would be very helpful. I suspect that the black and white photos featuring workers Les Houghton, Malcolm Ashton, Jim Frost, Stan Geldart, Hugh McMullen and Bill Evans are from the 50s or 60s but it's had to tell from the way they're dressed. If you know more please get in touch.
