A mixed batch of new images from Marple Local History Society Archives added this morning.

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0

They include a group of workers in an unknown location but thought to be Marple. Do you recognise anyone?

Also an interesting image of Black Wharf, showing that there was once a canal building near to the present day entrance to the park. I haven't seen that before:

I've been loaned a folder of photographs of Marple District Centre by Eddie Ashworth, who worked on the District Centre improvements during the 1970s and 1980s. The photos were taken by Pete Robinson and I've started to scan and upload them today. Most of them have been added to the District Centre folder:

But there are also a few others that fall into different albums, so use this link to see all the new additions:

This morning another mixed batch of images from the Janet Holmes collection have been added to the Virtual Tour:

Also, here's a copy of the update on the Virtual Tour pasted from the Christmas Greeting on the main site. Figures quoted are before this most recent upload:

Over 2.8 Million image views on the Marple Website Virtual History Tour!

As I write, the counter on the Virtual History Tour has reached 2,821,482 image views and we are now working towards the amazing target of 3.0M sometime in 2016.

Due to the demands of the skatepark project and building a new extension at home the Virtual Tour has taken a bit of a back seat this year, but we've still managed to add nearly 800 photos over the last 12 months. The total number of images on the Virtual Tour has now reached 10,513 and they've been viewed an amazing 348,944 times since Christmas 2014. Despite scanning the last folder from Marple Local History Society's photo archives in 2014 I still have a significant backlog of new random folders of images from the society plus a large number of postcard images provided by collector Janet Holmes and I'm looking forward to sharing them during 2016.

Without wishing to steal their thunder, The Marple Website has also been working on a further collaboration with Marple Local History Society this year, so look out for an announcement early in the New Year that will have local history buffs salivating!

Once again, local photographer Arthur Procter has done some sterling work recording just about everything that happens in Marple over the last year and his excellent contributions have included Marple Carnival 2015, Marple 150 and the last ever Marple Locks Festival, Hawk Green Festival, Mellor Country Fete, Mellor Mill Fact and Fun Day, Marple Food and Drink Festival, the Remembrance Service in Memorial Park and Marple 2015 Christmas events. We've also had contributions from other photographers too, notably from a young Jake Taylor who I hope we'll see more of in 2016.

A handful of images relating to Marple Boys Brigade have been uploaded to the Virtual History Tour this morning, including a couple of pics of the original 1929 enrollment certificate recently discovered in a re-used photo frame. There are also a few c 1955 pictures of Leslie Atkinson provided by his sister Hilary. Unfortunately we don't know any of the other names at the moment but if you can identify any of them please do share!

If the mill was demolished in 1957 and Marple hall demolished in 1959, how come the sun dial is in memorial park? That doesn't add up unless things were stripped from Marple hall prior to it being demolished!

A good question Jay! The decline of Marple Hall was well advanced in 1954. Here's a quote from a longer article in the Manchester Guardian of 7 April 1954:

Quote from: Manchester Guardian of 7 April 1954
Lead looters have stripped the roof, and a magnificent sundial which stood outside the main entrance on a tier of steps was recently pushed over for no other reason than as a trial of somebody's strength. It was rescued before it could be hammered into pieces, and now stands in Marple Park as a gift to the village.

This was around the time that the stained glass was moved to Bunbury Church and it became a race against the vandals to save whatever was possible. As I understand it (and the pictures on the tour show) it was only when the hall was a total ruin that it was "demolished" in 1959.

This dates the picture in question to some time between 1954 and 1957:

A quick handful of images from MLHS relating to Hollins Mill have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning:

They include the first full-on picture of the lodge at the Stockport Road entrance to Memorial Park that I've seen.
