i am sure that i was told has a kid that it led to Marple Hall or the house at roman lakes (cant remember which one), this was for the staff to get to church

I wonder if anyone can help me,opposite all Saints Church in Marple there are some steps fenced off,they lead to what looks like an underground passage,anyone know where it leads and what it was for?
