Well since the original post the Ring o' Bells Quiz Night has moved to Thursdays at 9pm. The first prize is still 8 free drinks but you can now consume them on the night or the following week, which is much better for those who have to go to work the next day! Second prize varies but is usually a bottle of wine, or 4 bottles of beer.

The quiz costs £1 per head, all of which goes to the evening's charity or local good cause. They usually run two or three in a row for each organisation. Regular beneficiaries are Marple Bands, Clough Farm Animal Sanctuary and Friends of Marple Memorial Park but others can apply and they just have to put in a team.

There is also still an "Open the Box" competition. 50% of the proceeds go to the charity and 50% is put into the prize fund. Prizes are limited to £50 per box, so sometimes there can be 4 or 5 boxes out of 12 with money prizes in. That doesn't stop you winning the odd booby prize like a toilet roll though (we now have two). Other prizes can include drinks, trips on the Bell or meals at the pub.

The quiz format is 40 general knowledge questions, 10 music questions and 20 picture round questions. There is a handicap system for teams of more than 4, and teams of less than 4 get bonus points. There is also a handicap for previous winners and runners-up, so it is very hard for the same team to win every week.

We go pretty much every week, the Friends of the Park often benefit and it's a good night out. The beer at the Ringers is very good too.

The Ring O'Bells Quiz tonight and next week is to raise funds for the Hawk Green (Marple) band.The Take your pick box prize fund stands at £140 ,with chance of 10 other price.The Snowball question prize fund stands at £70.Please come along and support all your local charities and groups

The Royal Scot in Marple Bridge has an excellent quiz every Thursday, about an 8:30pm start

Good prizes, but note this is a difficult quiz, not your usual easy questions

Worth mentioning that the ringers is £1 per person........the Andrew Arms and H&H quizzes are both free to enter.

Also worth mentioning that at the Ring o' Bells, all of the £1 entry fee goes to charity or local groups and over £30,000 has been raised there since the quizzes first started.

Windsor Castle quiz is free to enter - prize is usually two bottles of wine and the privilege of setting the following weeks picture quiz.  Also Jo lays on free food - usually sausage or chip butties or sometimes indian food or chilli.

Thursday - Quiz at the Hatters. Starting at around 9.15. Themed starter round of 10 questions and then 8 rounds of 6 questions on a variety of random (always different) topics. 8 pints for the winning team and a runers up prize. Free entry, but with a 50p per person snowball pot midway through.

Monday:

The Crown, Hawk Green. 9pm. Format unknown

Tuesday:
Don't know of any

Wednesday:
The Ring o'Bells, Marple. 9pm start. 2 rounds of 20 questions, 20 pictures, 10 pieces of music. "open the box" game. 2 bottles of beer for second place, first place is 8 drinks to be finished on the night. Can be quite a late finish

The Hare and Hounds, Dooley Lane. 9pm start. 3 rounds of 15 questions. 8 drinks for the winners, not sure what second place gets. Drink vouchers can be used at a later date. Quite a prompt finish

Thursday
The Marple Tavern, 9pm. Format unknown

The Andrew Arms, Compstall. Nominally a 9pm start, can actually start as late as 9.30. 2 rounds of 20 questions, 20 pictures, 6 "dingbats". "play your cards right" game. Can be a late finish. Not sure what the prizes are, we've never won!

Sunday
The Royal Oak, High Lane. 9pm start, format unknown

and as of Sunday 18th April, The Railway, Rose Hill. 9pm start. Format unknown, but the quizmaster is Peter Clarke, former landlord at the Ringers.
