I responded to the British Gas Offer of free cavity wall insulation, after I had seen an article on the BBC BREAKFAST PROGRAMME.
They replied pretty quickly saying they would contact me within 24 hours.

The next email was an apology stating that demand was so high, they could not respond as promised but would contact me asap

We had hillserve round to do our cavity wall insulation. The chappii came round and measured, then told my wife that we'd have to have a vent as we had a 7kw open fire. We actually have a 4kw closed fire (a stovax stockton 4). Even more galling, when the fitters came round to drill the holes ready for filling, they pointed out that we already *have* cavity wall insulation and the chap who came round to measure should have spotted that....

 ::) ::) ???

Even if you had a 7kw fire you don't need a vent, these people bug me as they are quoting gas regs when I bet they are not gas safe registered. This has been going on for years and I bet they have conned loads of people using these scare tactics.

It has been mentioned already but Hillserve are now owned by British Gas and now come to your houses wearing a black mask and saying stand and deliver.

Bit early to tell on the bills front as only done 4 months ago, but to be honest can't say that it feels any warmer inside!
However when it was the freezing spell before Christmas we didn't have to raise our thermostat more than just a degree or so higher so maybe it kept in the heat a bit better  :-\

Hi Elpram, they did tell me that it used to be £150.00 but has just come down in price to £99.00.  They also mentioned that my house was within the square metre allowance ?? ( Im in a 3 bed semi ) .

Did you think they were any good, my next door neighbour has just had it done and she cant tell the difference  :(

It cost us nearly £200 with Hillserve - should have been £150 apparently for our house type and number of bedrooms but the outside measurement was just over that allowed by the grant so we had to pay extra!

Im having this done , and Im wondering if anyone else on the forum did, and has it made much difference .  It is done by a company called Hillserve based in Bredbury, who are part of British gas .

They told me that if people want it doing, then it is £99  ( the £50 offer has expired but I made my appointment for survey in Jan so offer still stood )  .. it still sounds like a good deal to me though  at £99.

My house is really draughty , and no its not the hot air I spout  ;) on here lol , and Im told this will help reduce it  ( the draughts, not the hot air !)

I've received the following email and letter with a request to share it with Marple, Mellor and Marple Bridge residents:

Hi Mark,

I have been looking on the Marple Website, as I would like to advertise a discounted insulation offer available to residents of Marple, Mellor and Marple Bridge.

You may of heard of MESS (Marple Energy Saving Strategy) who are working with the Energy Saving Trust and Stockport MBC. Together we have negotiated  loft and cavity wall insulation for £50 each with a local insulation installer - Hillserve.

Please find attached (below) a copy of the letter which has been delivered to 1700 households throughout Marple for further information.

Many Thanks

Kind Regards

The Energy Saving Trust advice centre Greater Manchester is managed by Manchester City Council on behalf of the Energy Saving Trust. Manchester City Council is a Statutory Local Authority working with the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities.

Here to help everyone save energy in the home.

Exclusive time limited offer for Marple, Mellor & Marple Bridge Residents - Loft and Cavity Wall Insulation for £50 each!

As you may be aware the Marple, Mellor & Marple Bridge Energy Saving Strategy (MESS) is currently running in your area by a local group of volunteers in partnership with the Greater Manchester Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre and is fully supported by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. You should have received a
letter a couple of weeks ago introducing the project.

Just to remind you
“MESS” is running a 1-year programme which is being developed within your community to reduce local carbon emissions, help you reduce your energy consumption and save you money. Over 1,700 properties from the community have been selected to take part and the first stage is to establish what energy saving measures are already in place; this includes loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and efficient boilers.  The next stage is to link people up with whatever measures they do not have through special offers and grant availability.

Offer to you
As part of the programme, the Energy Saving Trust has negotiated reduced price loft and cavity wall insulation with a local company called Hillserve Ltd, so you can get loft and cavity wall insulation installed for £50 each. As your property has been selected as one of the 1,700 properties to take part, this offer is available to you.
We are therefore offering you loft insulation and cavity wall insulation fitted for £50 each.  This is based on an average house size* and no extra equipment being needed to fit it e.g. scaffolding etc.

Why are we doing this?
One of the MESS targets is to reduce the carbon emissions of people living in Marple, Mellor and Marple Bridge, but also to get people thinking about how much energy they use in the home and how they can reduce it.

As you lose 35% of heat from your home through your walls and 26% through your loft, both cavity wall and loft insulation prove to be the most cost effective measures for saving energy in the home. Having both loft and cavity insulation installed can save you approximately £300 a year on your fuel bills, as well as making your home
feel warmer and more comfortable.

Who is eligible for the offer?
If you are a resident of Marple, Mellor or Marple Bridge and have received this letter then yes, you are eligible for the discounted offer! If you are aged 70 years or older or in receipt of certain benefits, then you may qualify for insulation measures free of charge along with a new heating system. If you think this is the case, please contact Janine Wood on 0161 234 5459 or by email j.wood2@manchester.gov.uk.

How to apply for this offer?
The Greater Manchester Energy Saving Trust will be coordinating the offer and all you need to do is:
·   Complete the attached questionnaire (Home Energy Check) and send it off in the freepost envelope then….
·   Contact us on 0800 512 012 quoting: ‘MESS £50 Insulation offer’ and we will arrange for a FREE survey with the chosen installer, Hillserve Ltd. Do not forget to quote this otherwise the operator may not be aware of your eligibility.
·   You can e-mail us on eeac@manchester.gov.uk and again quote ‘MESS £50 Insulation Offer’ and provide us with your details.

·   Lastly you can return the reply slip enclosed with this letter providing your name and address details

Yours Faithfully,
