Thanks all - I'll get a quote from Doug for the patio door.

Will also be getting one from Warmshield who are Marple based as they did the rest of our windows 8 years ago!  I was particularly impressed as Mr Isaacs senior, who did the quote, said we didn't need a new patio door at the time when he could have sold us one anyway ... and it's still just about in one piece all these years later  :)

I've a list of local joiners - Jon Croft is on it - I just can't bring myself to start making calls as I'm dreading the "tradie blues" setting in as they disappoint me by not ringing back, not turning up (on time/at all) & not providing a price as promised :'(
TRY A QUOTE FROM PERENIAL WINDOWS  STOCKPORT ROAD MARPLE                     WILL BE CHEAPER THAN WARMSHEILD .
Life shouldn't be like this  ;)

Elpram, if you manage to get someone good to do your loft hatch with ladder, please let us know, as we could do with similar in our house..

At the risk of being boring I can endorse the comments about Doug - would trust him completely.
We had some joinery work done by Jon Croft which was fine, and again he is reliable and trustworthy.  We actually went away and left him to it, and had no problems at all.

I am having Marple roof line to install my patio doors  ( Doug Barwick ) .. I recently had all my facia boards , gutters, etc replaced by him  and he did a really excellent job  .. he also replaced some misted double glazed units for me too.

He replaced all the facias, gutters, etc on my sisters house, but also   on my inlaws house, and their neighbours too, and did an excellent job  and thats why  we chose him for us, his price was more than fair, and we are delighted with the job he did  .. he was clean and tidy with his work, and I really would reccomend him :)  .. but also, as a woman ( groan !! )  who was at home having to deal with people , whilst my husband was at work, I would trust him totaly , he is a really nice man.

Yes ... please do report back on the patio doors company as I would like to have mine replaced before the deep mid winter!

I agree about feeling woefully inadequate when you try and get tradies round for just a small job  :(  It can really get me quite stressed out!

If anyone knows a joiner/carpenter who could replace my loft hatch with a drop down one and install a telescopic loft ladder I would be very grateful!

I posted that I was trying to find an electrician on my other post, and thank you for the replies .

Ardek came to my property when I had a problem when I came back off holiday , and they  absolutely fine . Ardek came out quickly to us and I was pleased with the service there.

But I needed some extra work done  ( not related ) and unfortunately his quote was way out of my budget , ( but I must point out that when he came to my house in an emergency, his price was fair)

Now for my grumble , and local trades people please take note ...

FIVE ..  yes, FIVE electricians I have had at my house , and all except one was local ( he lived in woodley)  ... I wanted someone local , basically so that someone near to me could have the work  .. my logic thinking that if you keep it local, word of mouth gets around and people get more local work ... or is it just me ? :-\

Granted its not a big job, only a couple of hundred pounds worth of work .. but for the four out of five electricians who took the time to come to my house, who's time of mine they took up with looking at the work, and then giving me the spiel of " Yes I will give you a ring later  with a price "  and then never even bothered with a common courtesy phonecall to say either yes we want the work, or sorry, no we don't  ... would I recommend any of you in the future ? .. its going to be a big fat no !

When someone asks me, like I have asked many people if they know an  electrician, the answer will be, yes, I know plenty, but four out of five to my house I wouldn't even bother with , because they cant even manage a  common courtesy phone call that would take them less than two minutes .

Is it me ? because my logic is, yes its only a small job, but I might need a much bigger job in the future doing, plus, although my job is small, someone I know might need a big job doing  and surely local businesses custom is built on reputation , and building that reputation up ?  ... Maybe its me, and all the local electricians in Marple, are far to busy to do my small job  ( I'm feeling kinda small fry  :-[ :'(       )  ... but one day they might be wishing they have small jobs to tide them over... and maybe they might wish that they had rang all the customers they didn't bother even giving a second thought again at the time .. because if they had, they might be busy .

On a slightly positive note ( and believe me its only slightly )  I phoned an electrician on Windlehurst road, and he told me there and then he couldn't do it  ( so I guess you could call him electrician number six .. but we will let him off because he actually hasn't done anything wrong ) .

The last electrician who visited   , came round when he said he would, and said he would ring me,  but , he actually came back to the house , gave me a price ( similar to what others had "verbally quoted but would ring me back on " ) , dropped some equipment off and is ready when I am for the job to be done  .... result ???  ... I shall report back IF the job is completed .

That was electricians  .... don't get me started on  local plumbers  ... BUT I did get a leaflet though my letterbox advertising a certain plumber  ... so I might give him  a ring ( every cloud eh ?? )  .... but I shall be building myself up and bracing myself to dare  to ask him if he would even consider removing just one radiator and sealing it off  ?

Grrrrrrrrrrr !!! if you still need a plumber try ROY MARSDEN OF ROMILEY .07870333203.

Rant over  ;D

Im sure he did a very good job Barbara , and if you can afford the "extra" to get the person you like to do the job, then good for you, but I couldnt   ...  but also  I wouldnt have a cowboy in my house for the sake of getting a job done on the cheap  either :(

my grumble isnt about Ardek or his prices, far from it  , he obviously has many satisfied local customers and thats great  ( I have also been one of them )

Can only speak from personal experience but I think Derek (Ardek) would be worth spending the extra.  He did a really good job for us, and followed it up with all the necessary paperwork.  But you pays your money ..... :)
