I think it obviously depends on the economy at the time but my guess is that there will be continued use of major supermarkets and more use of internet shopping. Shops such as Tesco and Amazon will dominate due to their low prices at the expense of smaller local shops. I don't know if that can be prevented in a capitalist and globalised economy or even whether it should be.

I think shops that will continue to do well are those that people will use in between the weekly shop such as pound shops, fruit/veg shops, and services such as hairdressers/garages where people prefer to build a trusting relationship with a local person. I read a recent study which suggested that for food shopping most people prioritise price over many other things and of course some people can't be as ethical as they would like due to low income etc. so it is no surprise that the 'big 4' are in the lead and expanding.

I think the sale of commoditised goods will be largely the preserve of the Big 4, plus the likes of amazon as you say. But specialist shops offering real quality and service will thrive, and I'd include butchers and greengrocers in that.
