Highway Code - 201 Do not reverse from a side road into a main road. When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can.

Were does it state in the highway code that it is an offence to reverse out of your driveway,I have an up to date copy and cant find this rule....

Dale Road is fun at the moment at school times. One woman parks outside my house at 8.25am every day in order to bag herself and child an optimum parking spot, they then sit in the car for 15 mins, another parks her BMW opposite me at 2.45pm for the same reason. it is totally impossible to reverse out of my drive at these times, and I have to do a 93 point turn in order to get out. Last week I was walking (what? surely not?) home at 3.15 pm, there were small children on scooters and small bikes hurtling along both the pavement and in the road without any regard for traffic, and their parents were too busy chatting or texting to care. Do parents teach road safety any more?

I agree that it is best to reverse in and go out forwards where possible, it is actually a requirement although nobody seems to stick to any of these rules-pavement parking for example.
That does sound awful about how parents are parking. To be honest, RH traffic at school times was bad enough when it was just 300 puils. Now it must be far far worse. I wonder if it will improve with the new traffic systems that they are planning? Some people i know drive to RH yet live right near by and are not on the way to work. Their choice of course but if only more people would walk. Some of my best memories are with walking to school with my kids and chatting about the day.

It is actually an offence to reverse out of your drive (or from anywhere else) onto the highway. Perhaps it would make your life easier if you reversed into your drive when you get home?

The junction of Constable Drive and Hogarth Road is a nightmare as well.  Car drivers do u-turns, park on all the corners on the single yellow lines, park on the pavement and reverse without looking, all so that they can save their legs the few yards walk to the school.  Also the school bus, a single decker long bus, is always half empty.  Now unless it drops other children off at other schools first, surely a smaller bus would make more sense.

Has anyone tried negotiating Arkwright Road during school run times. The road is reduced so much by parked cars that it becomes a one way road. But if you want to see the latest Chelsea Tractors it is the place to go.

Seems a bit extreme! Maybe there should have been better signage. I have only been know to leave two notes in myt life - both because people parked right across the end of drives that I needed to access (one where I couldn't actually get out of my drive to go to my grandmas funeral - that note was very snotty and a bit emotional!)

If you want to see really silly parking pop over to most local primary schools - I know some parents have no choice these days but to drive their kids in, but these is no need to block drives, double park, park on corners etc - can't they see its their own kids they are putting at risk!

I strongly agree with this. Just so they don't have to walk a few extra metres, some parents park up so that those with wheelchairs or prams have to go into the road. When asked if they could move they swear or huff and puff about it and suggest you go in the road! Either that or they zoom up the kerb where your toddler is walking on the pavement! The selfishness of others is shocking at times.

It is actually an offence under the Traffic Movement Act 2004 to park adjacent to a dropped kerb giving egress from private land (ie across your house drive). It is also an offence for the owner of the property to do so. Interestingly, due to the somewhat odd wording of the Act, you can only invoke the law if you can't get out of your drive, not if you can't get into it.

You can ask the council to paint a white line on the road in front of your dropped kerb but you have to pay for it yourself. The last I heard it cost around £200

P.S  The landlord of the Railway pub has said parents can park their cars there in the morning and take children to school .

If your car was parked where I think it was parked ( the area of path that takes you to the path up to the tip ) ,  then the note appears to be very petty,  yes its on the path, but you could walk through the middle of the car park  no problem ,  I think you have to humour people like that .

Regarding the person who parked on someones drive,  that made me laugh , its funny but not funny, if you get what I mean .

Parking outside schools is a nightmare, the Head at Rose Hill seems to be reminding parents on a weekly basis about considerate parking, and this week in the weekly newsletter has stated that she is outraged that parents would risk the safety of children by inconsiderate and dangerous parking  .... what else can she do ??

Agree re: Primary schools. Nightmare around some of them. Cars not so much parked as 'abandoned'!

Right, just to finish off what I started here, I managed to get one photo this morning. It was a tricky business because I didn't want to slap up a picture of anyone's car with number plates showing etc but hopefully, from the picture that did turn out OK, you'll be able to see the 'path' that I THINK I was blocking/parked over.

I was really hoping the note writer would see/hear about this thread and come and respond but hey ho. Anyway, you'll all be delighted to know I'm over my irked and narky feelings on this subject, so happy to let it drop now! Thank you all for your responses.

Having previously almost next door to Rose Hill school, I once had the delight of coming home early to find someone parked in my drive. When challenged the mum simply shrugged and said 'you're never at home'.

I've only once left a note on a car and it happened one parents night when all the double parking meant it was impossible to get out of my drive and had left the road barely passable for a car. God knows what would have happened if their had been a fire, one assumed they would have all happily burned safe in the knowledge that at least they had a prime parking spot 10 yards from the school gate.

I would have parked in front of my house and blocked the car in the drive then told them I can not move my car as I have had a drink and come back when I have sobered up, that would teach the lazy arrogant parent.

With the fire engine issue I asked the local councilor on what would happen if there was a fire and a fire engine could not get past parked cars and there answer was there would be a few bent wing mirrors and scratches.......maybe if there is a firefighter on here they could reassure us is that really the case.
