Friends of the Earth have lots of information about supermarkets which is worth looking at - go to their website and search "supermarkets".  Some of the issues covered are how supermarkets cosy up to planning officers and bypass the council, myths about job creation for local people, how they reduce shopping choice for consumers, their aggressive planning and marketing tactics and how they prevent land being used to benefit local communities by buying it up and sitting on it.  (The Tesco store in Portwood gets its own section!)
