Tories bandying around accusations of racism...the world really is a strange place at the moment.

He was arguing that the union flag should not be seen as divisive and not a racist symbol. He made his points very well but he was arguing with one of those holier than though socialist types, he was always going to come away the winner.

I think Marple  needs and deserves a complete change

Are you unhappy with Andrew Stunnell? Why?

Lib Dem/Tory = same difference. Let's have a Labour MP.

Ewww no, not after the last lot...nasty pieces of work the lot of them. We'll all end up with lice.

I think Dave may have been right, his age was against him. I went to the little debate at the Methodist church before the election and people were quite hostile towards him despite his answers being liberal conservative as opposed to the right of the party. I felt there was a certain amount of racism in the room.

I also see your point re. tranny, that word seems to have been hijacked along with gay. I think it's the wireless these days.

Rather than labelling Marple as racist, perhaps the people of Marple just didn't want a tory?

It doesn't look like racism to me.  If you have a look at the way the Libdem majority has shrunk over the past few elections....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazel_Grove_(UK_Parliament_constituency)

.....you'll see that Abercorn made greater inroads into Stunnell's majority than any other Tory candidate in recent years.  The Libdem majority was down from nearly 20% in 2005 to just over 15% in 2010.  He also got a bigger share of the vote (33.6%) than any Tory since Tom Arnold held the seat in 1992.

I think his problem may be more a lack of local connections - he could be seen as a bit of a 'carpetbagger' candidate.  He is also very young, which in a constituency with more than its share of old codgers (including me) may be a bit of a drawback.......

(Mind you, by using the word 'tranny' you've given yourself away as an old codger too, Duke   :D )

He's just been on radio 5 arguing very well over race, would he have been a better mp for us? Was Marple simply too racist to vote an Asian mp?
