Adding to this when young we explored the tunnel that enters the Etherow just below Compstall Bridge - It originally came from the Bleach Works - sandy, scary and much better with a big, big torch rather than cycle lamps!

Have to say it sounds a fascinating story - and am very tempted to dust off the caving lamps.  I would like more information about tunnel size and construction though before wandering for a mile or so underground.  If a man-made adit would be interesting enough to get off the water for. I did notice the original poster from MHS did not leave any further details nor have his tunnel rat colleagues from the 80's (or their mums) added to the post.

I have emailed the Stockport Heritage magazine to see if they have information about them or if they know anyone who will investigate the tunnels as it is fascinating stuff !

We spent an enjoyable hour bushwhacking through the Dan Bank undergrowth down in the valley this afternoon....but saw no signs of any tunnel entrances!

Has anyone got a clearer idea of where to look...if they're still there at all?  ???

This is the picture of the Home Guard post which was destroyed !  Is this where the tunnels started ? Or are the tunnels further down ? Does anyone know ?  This is in the spot that is referred to in Howard's post .

No tunnels from here. Just an old air raid shelter, nothing more.

At school we were told that from the lodge cottage on the tow path off Station Road, that  there are tunnels there that lead up to All Saints Church and were used by Oldknows child  workers to keep them out of sight from the community as the community found the orphan  children offensive

On the blog of a local web design firm (http://www.stockport-web-design.com/) I came across a couple of interesting blog entries recently on the tunnels beneath Marple.

Here's the first about the tunnels under Dan Bank:
http://www.stockport-web-design.com/tunnels-on-dan-bank-directions-story/

And here's the second about the tunnels under the Roman Lakes from the Urban Exploration forums:
http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=40452

I have some fond memories of myself and a couple of friend scaring ourselves silly when exploring the Roman Lakes tunnels armed only with a dim bike lamp and some candles. Anyone have any more stories or pictures about these tunnels, particularly the Dan Bank tunnels which I knew nothing about.
