There is no evidence whatsoever than free parking generates extra business in fact there is evidence to the reverse that it drives people away.

And that evidence is.........?

I'm with you Dave. Even given some evidence, I'm aware that retailers in manchester are extremely angry about the imposition of parking fees on a Sunday in Manchester, apparantly they should be pleased. The Trafford centre could improve footfall by charging for parking? I can't see that as likely.

How many of those driving round and round the co-op live less than a mile away?

A supermarket shop often weighs more than you can carry easily in a cycle basket!

The idea that any car park should be free is just nonesense. Land as a rental value and the land owner bit it the LA or a private landowner has a right to a fair return on their asset. the car park charges being removed will put more money in the pocket of the Marple folk and therefore more money to spend locally that given the acceslorator effect, more money throughout Marple's economy

No, that's exactly what doesn't happen if you remove car parking charges, as illustrated by the people who at peak times are now driving round the Co-op car park and driving out again when they can't find a space.  They then go to another supermarket (I've done it myself more than once).   So they are actually moving money out of Marple's economy.

Parking restrictions such as time limits and charges are a vital way of keeping all-day parkers away from shop car parks, and out of roadside parking in shopping areas, so that they are available to the shoppers who keep local businesses going.

Is the co-op car park there for the co-op or for the park as well? Incidently, the car-park on the other side of the fire station is always empty even when the follow my leader cars are playing musical chairs in the co-op.

If all the car parks were free, the long-stayers would be scattered around all the car parks.

As it happens, I think the solution is free short-stay car park.

Good post .Dave but there are certain people in protest groups that don't want people to shop in marple anyway .they would prefer them to go out of town to other supermarkets .

Fines issues on private land at not enforceable anyway - just don't pay it unless they take you to court and you lose.
they are if you have permission from the landowner .

It boils down to breach of contract - ends up being more costly to fight than its worth - never bought a ticket in the co-op... Never will.
Shall we just say then they are doing it as a deterrent .to stop people parking .because the majority of people won't know what you've said will they .unless you stand there telling them .

Why do you feel the need to keep making this crack about benefits? Do you not realise how odious you sound?

So your happy to steal from me and other CT payers I see Duke. Money that should be used for local service you steal.

Nice meet you David. So typical of you.

Yes, I see it as an entitlement for my council tax. If I get a ticket, I buy a ticket off another motorist and appeal. I give another taxpayer the money and thereby bettering the community.

By parking for free, I shop locally and put money into the economy. + I pay your benefits

It can't come too soon - parking in the Co-op is now a real problem at times because of those anti-social folk who leave cars there all day.   >:(

Why are they anti-social? maybe they are visiting friends and organising social get-togethers on the park. Compared to non-communicating suprmarket shoppers thy are very social.

The answer is to make all car-parks free to use. I must admit, I never pay anyway

Of coarse duke just bang a few hundred on the community charge to pay for it .

Or join the real world and improve efficiency so that tax payers can park to shop in some shops that pay enormous business rats to the wasting council.

I don't see it as costing the council any money, it the car park was free, we could sack the traffic wardens saving ££££££££££££££££, the car park charges being removed will put more money in the pocket of the Marple folk and therefore more money to spend locally that given the acceslorator effect, more money throughout Marple's economy
