We used to live near the Ringers, and there were some great hills and roads around there. The fact that some such roads formed T-junctions with busier roads didn't seem a concern when we were six...

well,I'm not sure how much I can say about this.  

The hill is part of the farm over the road (behind the offices), but I don't think the farmer is bothered by people sledging there (I've been going for years and there's often loads of families there).  
The way in is over the gate basically.  
Word of warning though for this hill:  facing down the slope towards the road do not veer too far right as the drop into the Goyt is pretty big (once saw a kid bail with seconds to spare, his sledge smashed against the rocks in the river. Scary.)  The slope on the other side of the hill is good, nice and steep but levels out beautifully.
So yes, I'm afraid it's over the gate or nothing. think I've said enough.

I know that hill opposite the George Pub but how do you get onto it?

I'd just like to warn people about wooden sledges.  These may look 'authentic' and rather twee but can in fact be very dangerous, the potential for becoming tangled amongst the runners and breaking bones is undeniable, I've seen a couple of nasty accidents, once on the golf course at Mellor (great slope incidentally) and another time in Debdale Park.  
Toymaster or Hollins both sell excellent quality plastic sledges at very reasonable prices when snow does fall.  These sledges can handle some serious powder carving, whether sat down (weak) or stood up (sweet).
Must recommend the hill opposite the George pub (before the bridge leading into Compstall), absolute belter.
Take care if you are thinking of sledging in the cold seasons, any budding Meteorologists in Marple know if we are due snow this winter?

My first thought for sledging, is the hill on the ridge behind the Ridge Church.
We use to go up here has a big group, we use to go up at night and you had to make sure you came of the sledge before you hit the canal, there is the first hill then a ramp and then a long hill. I then remember going up on a saturday afternoon and it being packed full of people, i ended up in stockport infirmary with a fractured pelvis and about 3 months off school. Now i will not go sledging and hate the snow.

First spot to spring to mind is Brabyns Park, the slope opposite the first car-park is deceptively steep, I once spent an hour as a youngster trying to walk back up, it was literally like walking on ice!  Apart from that, head towards Mill Brow, there is a footpath through here which leads to Mellor Church (it is stunning along this route when it snows).  The hills either side of the church are stupendous, with misleading gradients, and 'bail or fail' scenarios at the bottom, you either jump or taste wall.  Fantastic.  
Fingers crossed for snow this winter, it snowed last on 15th February this year and it was ace.

Where are the best spots for sledging in Marple?  I am from North Manchester and used to sledge on a hill near my house but I am not familiar with accessible hills in Marple.  We have been sledging in Lyme Park but would prefer to get somewhere on foot.

As winter draws near and I get excited about the possibility of sledging, I've been thinking about the views around Marple and the surrounding area.  I like the views from the road leading to the Romper, on the right the grey haze of Manchester, on the left a nice green valley.  Does anyone else know any nice views around the area?
