Marple WWI Timeline display in Marple Memorial Park

The penultimate permanent timeline panel has been installed in the park today.

The remaining men will be added individually on their 100th anniversaries until 1st November 2018, when all the remaining men will be added in time for Remembrance 2018.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Oswald Neale.

Oswald was born in Mellor in around 1899 but moved with his family to Church Street, Marple, a couple of years later. He worked at the Goyt Mill before enlisting in April 1917.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Norman Sharples.

Norman was convalescing in a military hospital in Etaples following an injury to his foot but was killed during a bombing campaign that claimed 182 lives and wounded 643 others.

Yesterday two small permanent panels featuring Fanny Hudson and her staff at Brabyns Military Hospital, Marple Defence Corps and the story of the family originating from Marple who were lost on the Lusitania were added to the WWI Time-line:

3 more of the permanent Timeline panels have been installed today.

One of these includes an acknowledgement to Marple Area Committee, who provided £1,000 to pay for the displays.

HB Printing are doing a wonderful job of turning our plans into reality too!

Friends of the Park are very pleased to have installed the first permanent panel on the Marple WWI Timeline this morning.

A big thank you to HB Printing, who are producing the panels for us, and to Marple Area Committee, who have funded the new display.

There will be 6 panels in all depicting the 141 men killed during WWI on the memorial.

Proofs have been approved on panels 2 to 4 and cards for the 5th panel are being prepared. These panels will be installed as soon as practical once printed.

The final panel will remain temporary with men being added on the 100th anniversary of their death until 1st November. In November the final permanent panel will be installed with all the remaining men on it, including the 8 who died after Armistice, so that all 141 men are commemorated for Remembrance Sunday 2018.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Egbert Mackereth.

Egbert is commemorated on Marple and High Lane War Memorials and is known to have lived for a period at Windlehurst but otherwise little is know of his life in the Marple area.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Donald Harlow Budenberg.

Following the war the families of men who were buried in military graves were allowed to have a personal message engraved on the headstone. Mrs and Mrs Budenberg chose a phrase they thought best described their 21 year-old son: "A Very Gentle Perfect Knight".

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Josiah Bennett.

It's thought that Josiah was killed instantly, literally blow to bits, when his gun was hit by shellfire. A pal later reported that they could find no trace of him.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Richard Yarwood.

Richard was listed as “Missing” and it was June 1919 before the War Office confirmed to his anxious parents that he was presumed to have been killed on 15 April 1918.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Walter Bailey Hopwood.

Although brother Fred is officially recorded as being killed in action on 31st July 1917 he was still recorded as "missing" at the time Mrs Hopwood learned that her other son Walter had been killed in France on 10th April 1918.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about William Goddard.

William had been a farm worker all his life, and never slept a night away from home before entering the army. He was born in Chinley, but had been at High Lane over 30 years.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Thomas George Ferguson Warner M.M.

Having won the Military Medal in January, only days before he was killed by shell-fire Sgt. Warner was strongly recommended for further honours for rescuing a wounded comrade under fire.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Donald McLaine.

Donald lived at Tower Croft and his family were "well-to-do" but it didn't save them from grief. He was cousin to Arthur Rhodes and his sister married Kenneth Sinclair. All 3 lost their lives to the war.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Fred Gardiner.

Fred met and fell in love with Ellen Taylor while working on her father's farm on the Lyme estate. They were married in May 1917 but never got to celebrate their first anniversary.
