Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Thomas Platt.

Thomas's mother lost her husband in a car accident and both her sons to the war, Samuel in January 1917 and Thomas today. Imagine that!

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Allan Broom.

A quiet, steady youth, Allan had the goodwill and esteem of everyone who knew him. If he'd lived until 5th April he would have reached his 20th birthday.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Thomas Hallworth and Alan Norbury.

Thomas was the youngest of four Hallworth brothers (John William, Herbert, Harry and Thomas) who all fought for their country. Sadly, only Harry returned. Imagine loosing 3 out of 4 sons. Alan was reported missing in the spring of 1918 and it was hoped he'd been taken prisoner. When the armistice was signed and all prisoners of war returned, Alan was not amongst them. As a result a letter was sent to his family in 1919 stating that he was officially presumed killed between 21st and 28th March 1918.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about John Stanhope Collings-Wells V.C. D.S.O.

Lieutenant-Colonel John Stanhope Collings-Wells VC DSO (19 July 1880 – 27 March 1918) was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

There isn't space to do justice to Collings-Wells' achievements on the time-line card and a read of the 5 pages dedicated to him in the book "Remembered" is recommended. It out of print but still available in Marple's Heritage Library. The pages about JS Collings-Wells have also been available on The Marple Website since 1999 and have been migrated to the new site this morning: https://www.marple.website/local-history/js-collings-wells-vc-dso.html

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Harry Sylvester and Alec Morgan.

Although Harry Sylvester was killed on 23 March 1918 this was not confirmed until 12 months later, so he was recorded as missing for a whole year and his body was never found.  Alec Morgan, a former chauffeur in civilian life, was a driver attached to a Field Ambulance Unit and was killed with six others when the advanced dressing station he was located at was shelled.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Charles Henry Ingham and William Herbert Chaney.

Sapper Ingham was a well know vocalist from Marple Bridge and an ancestor of the Ingham family who helped to found Marple Band. Rifleman Chaney was a groom for Frank Barlow JP, of Woodville Hall and joined up with his two brothers in in 1915. He left a widow, Nellie, and a 4 year-old son living in Hawk Green.

The time-line has been quiet since January but with the start of the Spring Offensive 100 years ago today it's about to become horrendous!

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Ernest Bradbury.

Ernest came home over Christmas and married Miss Harriet Bennett, a girl from Stockport. She would become a widow before the end of March, when Ernest was killed with 445 other members of the Royal Field Artillery on the first day of the German Spring Offensive.

I'm delighted to report that thanks to funding of £1,000 awarded by Marple Area Committee last night Friends of the Park will be able to turn the WWI Timeline in the park into a permanent display.

The group will be working with HB Printing to create new aluminium di-bond panels in time for this year's Remembrance, marking the end of WWI, in November this year.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Thomas Wray.

Thomas was the first to fall in 1918, the final year of the war but not the final year of Marple's losses, which continued until late 1919.

As the timeline has been so well received Friends of the Park are looking at the possibility of making the display more permanent in 2018.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Frank Allen.

Sadly Frank's parents received the news of their son's death on Christmas Day morning 1917.

Frank was the last of the 46 Marple casualties (on Marple War Memorial) in 1917, bringing the total so far to 91. All will be quiet on the timeline now until 25 January 2018.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Joseph J Duddy.

Joe had been a prisoner of war for 3 years and 4 months before dying in the hands of the Germans on 4th December 1917.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Benjamin Phillips.

Ben, his brother George and their brother-in-law Arthur Lovelock emigrated to Canada but when war was declared, on 4 August 1914, the men decided to return to Britain to join up and enlist into the Cheshire Regiment. George seems to have come back almost immediately but Ben didn't enlist until around November 1916. By then, George had already been killed.

Colin was killed 100 years ago on Monday but unfortunately I didn't notice until last night that his page in the book Remembered is out of sequence after Ben Philips, whose date is 20 November. Apologies for this.

Colin worked at the Marple Co-Op before enlisting and lived with his wife Harriet on Queens Street. Colin miraculously escaped injury on one occasion when he was holding an officer's horse and a shell burst nearby killing the horse and eight men. Sadly that kind of luck doesn't hold forever!
