Marple WWI Timeline display in Marple Memorial Park

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about John Edward Jack.

Edward's family lived in Marple but he moved to Birmingham before signing up. So he wasn't as well known locally as his brother, 2nd Lt. Stanley Jack, who survived the war and lived in Marple until his old age.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Samuel Thelwall.

Newspaper reports of the time gave slight hope Sam may have been taken prisoner but after going missing on 24th October he was never seen again.

Now go back and read brother Fred’s card from 28 July 1916 and imagine how Mrs Thelwall must have felt after this latest news.

As Passchendaele continued its heavy toll on Marple and the rest of the country at this time in 1917, Friends of Memorial Park's WWI Timeline display in the park has been updated with information about William Austin, Joe Braddock and Ernest Greenhalgh, all three being killed 100 years ago today.

The bodies of William (brother of Leonard killed in 1916) and Ernest were never found and for some time the families must have clung to hope that they would turn up as prisoners of war.

Joe Braddock was a Boy Scout before signing up and in 2007 his 1915 Boy Scout's Note Book and Diary came into my possession. There are no great revelations or insights from Joe, just brief notes about football results, scouting and the like, but the whole thing is an interesting snapshot of the times. Some of the snippets of advice to scouts on each page may raise an eyebrow today though!

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Ernest Bennett D.C.M.

Ernest won his D.C.M. "For gallantry on 17th and 18th April 1915, near Ypres, in repairing wires and endeavouring to establish visual signalling under heavy fire." He was doing much the same 100 years ago today when he met his demise. 

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information cards about Ernest Bennett D.C.M. has now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 2 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Lt-Col. Cyril Benton Johnson and Pte. David Totterdell.

These two Marple men from very different backgrounds and circumstances both died on 21 September 1917. Much was written about Cyril, whose prowess and sporting ability the papers of the time waxed lyrical, but almost nothing is known about David and what kind of man he was, or the torment that he appears to have gone through prior to his death in the Union Workhouse. 

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. It starts on the far left with an A4 poster explaining what's happening and an information cards about Cyril Benton Johnson and David Totterdell have now been added. Cards about the remaining men will be added progressively over the next 2 years on the 100th Anniversaries of their recorded dates of death.

The Third Battle of Ypres continued to take its toll on the young men of Marple and the 16th August saw another three Marple men fall victim to The Battle of Passchendaele.

Here is a composite image of the three cards for Joseph Hague, Robert Clifford Dawson and William Arthur Stott added to the time-line in the park for 16 August 1917.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about James Everatt Sharples.

Despite assurances to James's family from his CO that his chums knew where he had been laid to rest, Private Sharples' grave has never been found. This is not unusual for Passchendaele and the vast majority of the remains of soldiers killed in battle on this front were to be lost in the quagmire created by the weather and shellfire.

Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Joseph Booth.

Joseph was mortally wounded on the first day of The Third Battle of Ypres but hung on until the early hours of the following day.

He lived with his mother at no. 2 Dooley Lane, the cottage with the pram outside in the image below.

The first day of The Third Battle of Ypres, also know as The Battle of Passchendaele, was Marple's blackest day of WWI. Six Marple men were killed and one, mortally wounded, would die the following day. Here is a composite image of the six cards for James W Hayes, Fred Hopwood, Bertram Smith, John T Booth, Robert C Dixon and Harold M Burton added to the time-line in the park for 31 July 1917.

Four of the six men were never found.

Charles's mother died unexpectedly in 1914, no doubt this and the death of Charles had a devastating effect on his father Henry, who died shortly after. So brother Eric was the only family member to survive the war.

Joseph was well known in Marple and for miles around, and much sympathy was felt for his widow and little boy in their irreparable loss.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. Friends of Marple Memorial Park's WWI Timeline Tribute display in the park has been updated with information about Charles Robert Hadfield Orford.

Charles came from a very privileged background. His father was a successful solicitor and they lived in a large house that was once where High Lane Library stands today.

The display is fixed to the railings in front of Hollins House in the park. The fourth member of the Carver family to give up his life for King and Country, Harold was the 53rd victim of the notorious Baron Von Richthofen (The Red Baron).

John was one of four brothers in the war and the first to be killed. Sadly he was not the last and by the end two more would be killed and only one left. Imagine that.
