The Oldknow Legacy Project Officer has sent the drawings for the landscape improvements at the Lime Kilns and the following accompanying words.
I understand that the work is due to start next week.
Marple Lime Kilns Upgrade...The site of Samuel Oldknow’s Limekilns is about to get a facelift with new paths, seating and interpretation that are more in keeping with its nationally important heritage status. Limestone features will be included as well as an interpretation of the tramways that were part of the original process. Soft works on site will include planting to form boundaries to Strines Road and Lime Kilns Lane and areas of wild flower meadow (seeds) will be planted. The works are part of the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Revealing Oldknow’s Legacy Project: Mellor Mill & the Peak Forest Canal in Marple.
We are pleased to share representative details of the scheme, which was developed by landscape architects Camlin Lonsdale following several well attended public participation events as well as consultation with Historic England and Stockport Council. Thanks to everyone who has participated in the design process.
Scheduled Monument Consent has now been obtained from Historic England and works are planned to commence later in November with completion in December. Installing onsite interpretation together with wayfinding signs including fingerposts guiding visitors to the site will follow early in the new year when an event to mark the formal opening is also planned.
People who attended a recent ‘Friends’ event got a preview of the proposals and the opportunity to talk about the future potential both for the site and the structure. Until recently a little known or appreciated slice of Marple’s social and industrial history, the Kilns could become an important feature or visitor attraction. A follow up meeting is planned later in November.
